Most of Friday’s football scrapped

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina continues to affect areafootball games and other athletic events. Storm damage in thesurrounding area has led to the cancellation of most of Friday’sscheduled games.

Franklin County, coached by Grady McCluskey, was able to find agame to replace its date at Lawrence County. Instead, theMeadville-based Bulldogs will travel to Terry to play the Class 4ABulldogs. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Brookhaven Academy and Copiah Academy resume play Friday nightafter last week’s postponements. The BA Cougars travel to AmiteSchool Center in Liberty and the Colonels host Central Hinds for aDistrict 3-AA showdown.

Area games which won’t be played are South Pike at Brookhaven,Madison St. Joseph at Bogue Chitto, Loyd Star at Enterprise andWesson at West Lincoln. In Pike County, the Amite, La. game atMcComb, North Pike at Raymond and Jackson Prep at Parklane won’ttake place. However, South Pike has contracted a Friday night gameat Noxubee County.

Hazlehurst will host Wilkinson County Friday night. Kickoff is 7p.m.

Ole Brook head coach Tucker Peavey said the hurricane had causedhavoc with pregame preparations. On Tuesday, electrical power wasstill out in some areas of the city. Contacting some players wasdifficult at best.

“We have to get back into football-playing shape,” said Peavey.Practices are scheduled Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings forPeavey’s Panthers, starting at 9 a.m.

Peavey said he and South Pike coach Randall Huffman had agreednot to play last Friday. That decision was enforced by theMississippi High School Activities Association in an officialannouncement, postponing all games. The Sept. 2 games originallywere postponed until Sept. 9.

Huffman did express an interest in making up the game thisFriday. However, Brookhaven superintendent Lea Barrett elected topostpone school and all other activities until Sept. 12.

Brookhaven’s next football playing date is Friday, Sept. 16, atClinton.
