Services for Leland “Tootsie” Smith, of Brookhaven, are 11 a.m.Monday, Sept. 12 at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial inFriendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith, 80, died Sept. 9, 2005 at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter. He was born in Franklin County on Feb. 19, 1925, to J.Bunyan Smith and Lola (Smith) Smith. He was reared by Issiah Loftonand Lucretia Lofton.

He was a retiree of International Paper Co. and served in theNavy between 1942 and 1946 aboard the U.S. Crater “Crater Raider”during World War II. He was a Mason with the Brookhaven Lodge. Hewas a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, BarneySmith and Homer Smith; and his sister, Adilee Montgomery.

Survivors are his wife of 62 years, Helen P. Crane Smith, ofBrookhaven; his daughter, Abbie Gail Dunaway and her husband,Bailey Dunaway, of Brookhaven; his brother, Clyde Smith and hiswife, A. Dee, of Hemphill, Texas; his brother-in-law, W. A. Craneand his wife, Ruby, of Brookhaven; his grandsons, Danny Dunaway andhis wife, Ginnie, of Brookhaven, and Kevin Dunaway, of Brookhaven;her granddaughter, Melissa Gardner and her husband, Whitney, ofFort Polk, La.; and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth BaileyDunaway, Briana Dunaway, Sara Harper Dunaway, Savanna Dunaway,Madeline Dunaway, Isabelle Dunaway, Grason Dunaway, and GretaGardner.
