Forego aid until worst off served

Dear Editor,

This is in response to the publicity generated by the disasterrelief aid offered through the American Red Cross. It is sad thatso many people just don’t get it. I am not talking about thereceipt of money but the total lack of understanding. The Red Crosshas stated that they will be here in our community until everyvictim has been taken care of.

If everyone would analyze his or her individual situationhonestly and let that determine where they should be in line forfinancial aid, I imagine the problem at the multi-purpose buildingwould take care of itself. Everyone who is entitled to benefitswill receive them.

Like the majority of the citizens in Brookhaven and LincolnCounty, I sustained some property damage and suffered through an11-day period of no power, but there are people from our area, aswell as surrounding towns and states who suffered so much more. Some of these people have nothing. Let these people haveeasy access to the help that they need, then wait your turn inline.

The American Red Cross is almost totally dependent on volunteersto man these disaster relief aid stations, as well as the shelters.I am sure that these volunteers have just about had it with all ofthe negative opinions, verbal abuse, and out-and-out hostilityshown to them during this trying time. I think they deserve betterthan this from our community.

Susan F. Hines,
