BA Cougars rip WCCA

Brookhaven Academy welcomed the Wilkinson County ChristianAcademy Rams to Cougar Field on Friday evening for their fourthgame of the season. Led by a balanced team effort, the Cougarsprevailed with a 29-7 victory and improved to 3-1 on theseason.

Paul Davis led the Cougar offense, gaining 103 yards on 16carries and scoring two touchdowns. T-Boy Lynch followed Davis with15 rushes for 84 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Brookhaven took an early 6-0 lead with 6:18 remaining in thefirst quarter on an 8 yard run by Davis, capping an eight-play,64-yard drive.

The two teams traded possessions the remainder of the firsthalf, battling turnovers and wet conditions, thanks to afternoonrainfall. Wilkinson was able to score late in the first half on anine-yard run by Chris Gann, giving the visitors a 7-6 lead at theintermission.

“We really weren’t running the right defense for what they weredoing offensively,” said Brookhaven coach Ray Ishee. “We made someadjustments at halftime and were able to shut them down in thesecond half.”

Wilkinson seemed to be able to run with ease in the first half,relying on their backfield giants. Gann weighed in a 205 pounds,and Rams fullback Eli Ashley weighed in at 240. The two compilednumerous yards in the first half, but costly turnovers helped theCougars prevent the Rams from scoring.

Brookhaven took control of the game in the second half, scoringthe game’s final three touchdowns. Lynch reached the end zone forthe first time of the night with 3:23 showing in the third quarteron an 11-yard run.

After a Wilkinson fumble gave the Cougars possession at the Rams7-yard line, Lynch added his second score of the night on a 7 yardrun. Davis added his second touchdown on 2-yard run late in thegame, pushing the Cougar lead to the final of 29-7.

“We played well as a team,” said Davis. “Our defense stepped itup in the second half and shut them down.”

Junior quarterback playmaker Price Sessums finished the game9-for-15 for 92 yards. He also gained 54 yards on 5 carries. StevenCovington led the receivers with 5 catches for 68 yards.

Ashely led the Rams with 47 yards on 11 carries. Gann finishedwith 26 yards on 8 attempts.

On defense, Kolby Byrd and Paul Davis led theCougars with 12 tackles a piece. Chip Wells added nine stops andRuss Thames had 7. Covington and Byrd each recorded andinterception. Wells recovered a fumble.

Brookhaven Academy hosts Columbia Academy this Friday forhomecoming and the district 4-AA opener for both teams. Kickoff isset for 7 p.m.
