Bulldogs knock off Cobras 21-0

WESSON — Despite a two-week layoff and 151 yards worth ofpenalties assessed against them, senior running back JasperDucksworth and the Mize Bulldogs had plenty of firepower to knockoff the previously undefeated Wesson Cobras 21-0 Thursday night inStone Stadium on the Co-Lin campus.

Wesson falls to 3-1 on the season and Mize improved to 2-1.

Ducksworth, who stands 5-foot-5 and weighs 165 pounds, had anexceptional night. He rushed for 202 yards on 10 carries in thefirst half and finished the night with 18 carries for 291yards.

“Jasper is our go-to guy,” said Mize head football coach KennyRobinson following the win. “We’ve been off 2 weeks. You have toget back into your game. We lost 10 starters on defense last year.We had a couple of 9th graders start tonight.”

On the down side, Ducksworth was ejected from the game with 41seconds left to play after a hard, late hit on Wesson quarterbackMicah Davis.

Maurice Ducksworth, a junior, scored a pair of touchdowns thatwere set up by older brother Jasper’s big runs for theBulldogs.

“I knew we had to contain Ducksworth,” said Wesson head coachTommy Clopton after the game. “I am proud of our kids effort.”

After holding Wesson to three downs and forcing the hosts topunt on their opening possession, Mize marched 90 yards in 13 playsand ran 8 minutes off the clock to set up Maurice Duckworth’s8-yard touchdowns run. Hugo DelCid’s PAT kick was good to give theBulldogs an early 7-0 lead over the Cobras. Highlighting the drivewas a big 55-yard run by Jasper Ducksworth.

In the opening moments of the second quarter, Wesson’s BobbyBell recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Mize 37-yard line. However,the Cobras were held to three downs and had to punt.

First-half action saw the Cobras rush the football 19 times for48 yards and controlled the football for 9 minutes.

Wesson kicked off to Mize in the third quarter and the Bulldogsmounted a 4-play, 60-yard scoring drive, highlighted by a 42-yardrun by Jasper Ducksworth that helped set up a 5-yard keeper byquarterback Isaiah Keyes for the touchdown and a 13-0 lead. DelCidmissed the PAT kick with 10:04 left.

The Bulldogs recorded their last TD of the game on a 60-yard,7-play drive that resulted in a 51-yard pass-play from Keyes toMaurice Ducksworth for the 21-0 lead following DelCid’s extra pointkick at the 4:25 mark.

At the 1:43 mark in the fourth quarter, Wesson’s Chance Peetsrecovered a Jasper Ducksworth fumble but the Cobras were not ableto convert it into points.

“Our kids played hard,” said Clopton. “We made some mistakes. Wehad three turnovers.”

Wesson junior running back Otho Smith led the running game with17 carries for 51 yards. Micah Davis, who was 1-for-7 for 2 yards,rushed for 19 yards on 6 carries. Peets finished with 21 yards on 5carries.

“Wesson has a good ball club,” added Robinson. “Wesson got somebig plays. Davis is a good quarterback. Wesson was wellprepared.”

Mize finished with 11 first downs and 461 yards total offense.Wesson had 122 offensive yards and 9 first downs.

Wesson senior Blake Brister went out of the game on the fifthplay of the Cobras’ opening drive with a knee injury. Brister satout the remainder of the game.

Wesson visits Loyd Star next Friday, Oct. 7, for Region 6-2Aaction. Mize hosts Pelahatchie in a Region 7-2A contest. Both gamesbegin at 7:30 p.m.
