Brunt’s move to TB nets dividends for Copiah Colonels

GALLMAN — Copiah Academy head football coach Mitch Mitchellmoved senior wide receiver David Brunt to tailback for the 2005year. The move could not have been better for Brunt and the Colonelfootball team.

In last Friday’s 31-10 District 3-AA win over Riverfield, La.,Brunt powered the Copiah running game with 24 carries for 213 yardsand scored three touchdowns. His TD runs were of 50, 2 and 78yards.

For his accomplishments, Brunt has been named The DAILY LEADER’SOffensive Player of the Week. The Colonels stand 5-1 overall and2-1 in district play.

“David has done a great job for us,” said Coach Mitchell “Lastyear, he was a wide out for us. He weighs about 190 pounds and hasgood speed. I thought he had the potential (at tailback). He had along run late in the game (against Riverfield) to ice it forus.

“He’s an A and B student,” added Mitchell. “David is a quiet kidaround us. He doesn’t say a lot. He does his job.”

Brunt, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 190 pounds, runs a 40-yarddash in 4.6 time. In the weight room, he power cleans 253 pounds,squats 465 and bench presses 245.

“I’m excited,” said Brunt, about being named DAILY LEADEROffensive Player of the Week. “I am proud of it. It showcases whatI can do. My line does a great job helping me.”

Brunt was pleased with beating Riverfield last week, especiallyafter a heart-breaking 9-8 loss to Adams County Christian Schooltwo weeks ago.

“It was great,” explained Brunt. “It gives us a chance to go tothe playoffs.

“Losing the game two weeks ago was tough,” continued Brunt. “Iam real proud of our team and how we came back from that roughloss.

“We came back and took care of business (Riverfield). It was oneof our biggest games so far this year.”

Brunt said he likes playing tailback and getting his hands onthe football a lot more. “I like it a lot. I get to tote the ballnearly every single play. It brings the game close to you.”

When asked about the touchdowns, Brunt said they were threedifferent play calls. “First one was an option, second was astraight lead and third was a trap to the left.”

Brunt shared credit with his offensive lineman for helping himscore this year. “We have two guys back from last year. We had agreat line last year. These guys, they stepped up and picked itup.”

The Colonel linemen Brunt spoke of include Danny Pyles at rightguard, Kent Miller at right tackle, Ben Berch at center, Jon AlanDifferent at left guard and Matthew Wright is the left tackle.

“Fullback Jake Guess does a great job of blocking linebackers,”stated Brunt. “Guess gets me the space and clogs up the holes. Heis my lead blocker. Daniel Sims (quarterback) played a lot the lastgame. Sims ran the option.

‘We jelled especially the second half (against Riverfield),”continued Brunt. “We never looked back.”

Brunt said his father was on the 1981 state championshipfootball team at Copiah.

Brunt also plays baseball (shortstop, pitcher, first baseman),basketball (wing) and runs track (relays, 100 and 200 meter dash,triple and high jump.)

“I won south state high jump my 10th and 11th grade year,” saidBrunt. “I placed second in the high jump last year. I won districtin both triple and high jump. Last year, I won the 100-meter dashin district.”

Brunt said he appreciates all the help he has received from theColonel coaching staff. “I would like to thank Coach Mitchell,Coach (Scotty) Kline and Coach (Lance) Teasley for pushing me thissummer. I put on a lot more weight and I think it has helped.”
