Lady ‘Cats wallop Weir

BOGUE CHITTO — The Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats whipped the WeirLions 16-1 and 17-1 in a best-of-three series in the first round ofthe Class 1A state slowpitch softball playoffs Tuesday night.
Bogue Chitto (24-3) travels to Sebastopol (19-5) Saturday forthe second round of the 1A state playoffs. Sebastopol eliminatedStringer 14-5 and 11-1 in other first-round action last night.
“We did a great job tonight,” said Bogue Chitto head coach ScottLeggett. “These were two important wins but they do get tougher. Wehit the ball well and played good defense. And we play atSebastopol Saturday.”
Latoya Braxton was the winning pitcher in the doubleheader.Braxton fanned one batter and walked one in the opener then struckout two and walked one in the finale. Kia Nash absorbed the losses,with one strike in the opener.
“Bogue Chitto is the best ball-hitting team that I have seen,”said Weir coach Laura Faulkner. “We did not show up. Bogue Chittojust hit the ball all around. My girls just could not get anythinggoing. And Bogue Chitto’s No. 22 (Meleah Brown) is a very goodplayer.”

The Bobcats posted 10 runs in the first inning and added sixmore in the third for a 16-0 lead. The Lions scored their only runin the top of the fourth in the five-inning contest.
Braxton led Bogue Chitto with a home run and a single. Alsohomering was Shaquille Burton. Meleah Brown tripled and singledtwice. Tripling was Kelli Howard. Chelsey Miller, Candace Avants,Dori Hall and Caitlyn Owen collected two singles apiece. Singlingwas Kimberlee Thomas, Jessie Miller and Devon Welch.
Singling twice for Weir was Shana Evans. Tiffany Gibbs hitsafely.

In the final contest, the Bobcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead inthe first inning. In the next three innings, Bogue Chitto scoredone, five and six runs to secure the four-inning victory.
Directing the Bobcats with a homer and two singles was Avants.Jessie Miller doubled and singled twice. Doubling and singling wasWelch. Kelli Howard, Braxton, Hall and Burton followed with twosingles apiece. Chelsey Miller, Brown and Owen singled.
Weir got a single from Christina Crayton, Samantha Miller,Shaquita Fair and Evans.
