‘It’s looking good’ for flea market

WESSON – Organizers are taking last-minute booth reservationsand putting the finishing touches on plans for Saturday’s 34thAnnual Wesson Flea Market.

“It’s looking good,” said Kenneth Furr, chairman of the eventthat is scheduled for 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in downtown. “We’re goingto have a great number of vendors.”

Despite some cancellations due to Hurricane Katrina, Furrexpects more than 200 vendors for the popular festival. Vendorswere expected to begin setting up today at 5 p.m.

“Most all the spots are full,” Furr said as he worked towardgetting the few remaining booth spaces reserved Thursday.

Furr said vendors are coming from Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee,Alabama and “all over Mississippi.” He added that some vendors arecoming to Wesson after wrapping up their activities Thursday at theCanton Flea Market.

“We’ve got a good many food booths, arts and crafts and fleamarket stuff,” Furr said.

Furr said last year’s event drew more than 5,000 people toWesson. He was expecting a similar crowd for this year’s fleamarket.

“It’ll be a beautiful day for it,” Wesson Volunteer FireDepartment Chief Randall Drane said.

The flea market is the Wesson VFD’s primary fund-raiser for theyear. Drane was optimistic about another successful event.

“So far, we’ve gotten a great response from our vendors,” hesaid.

Flea market proceeds will be combined with revenue from otherfund-raisers to go toward the purchase a new water tank truck.

Drane said the water tank truck will cost an estimated $156,000.The tanker truck would join three pumper trucks in the Wesson VFDfleet.
