May’s 6 touchdowns, 387 yards power Enterprise to victory

For the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave, it was a case of too muchMay in October as the visitors dropped a 48-27 decision to the hostEnterprise Fighting Yellow Jackets Friday night at Harry L. ColeField.

Terrell May, the Jacket’s senior running back, carried the ball23 times for a school-record 387 yards and six touchdowns, as wellas a two-point conversion to push his season running total to over950 yards.

“I didn’t expect to have such a big game,” said the soft-spokenMay. “The (offensive) line blocked real good”.

The win pushed the Fighting Jackets to 4-2 overall and 4-1 inRegion 4-1A action. Cathedral fell to 2-4 on the year and 1-4 inRegion 4-1A.

“We played hard,” said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley. “But,we had too many breakdowns. We knew 33 (May) would be tough tobring down. He broke through all our tackles.”

The Green Wave took its only lead of the game with 4:58 to playin the opening quarter. Patrick McDonough fired a 28-yard scoringpass to Daniel Culbert to close a nine-play, 74-yard drive. MurphyHinson kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Cathedral lead.

The Jackets took the lead for good on May’s 72-yard touchdownrun with 4:40 to go in the quarter. May then ran for the two-pointconversion to make the score 8-7.

Just over three minutes later, May picked up touchdown numbertwo. His 41-yard run halted a four-play, 52 yard-march with 1:34 togo. The drive was started with Alex Powell’s interception, hisfourth in the last three games. The extra point kick was no goodand left the Enterprise lead at 14-7 after the opening stanza.

A Chris Moak interception led to the the next May touchdown, theonly score of the second quarter. Taking over at the Cathedral19-yard line, the Jackets scored with 9:37 to play in the half.Seth Hopkins kicked the PAT to put the score 21-7 at the half.

May’s fourth touchdown came with 2:27 to play in the thirdquarter. The 53-yard run capped a four-play, 62-yard drive. Hopkinsadded the extra point for a 28-7 score.

Following an Enterprise fumble, the Green Wave got back on thescoreboard with 1:02 to play in the quarter. McDonough passednine-yards to Daniel Hollowell for a touchdown to cap a short,two-play, 19-yard march. The failed PAT left the score at 28-13after three periods.

May picked up touchdown number five with 9:03 to play in thegame. This one, a 54-yard run, ended a six-play, 79-yard drive.Hopkins’ PAT put the score at 35-13.

May’s final score of the night came with 7:05 to left in thegame. His second 72-yard touchdown run into the end zone came afterthe Jackets regained the ball on Moak’s second interception of thegame. Hopkins once again kicked the PAT to make the score42-13.

Cathedral closed the gap to 42-21 with 6:43 to go in the game.Hollowell ran for a 31-yard score and McDonough threw to MatthewHall for the two-point conversion .

The Jackets ended their scoring with 6:01 left when Moakscrambled 62-yards for a touchdown. The failed two-point conversionattempt left the score at 48-21.

The final points of the night came from the Green Wave with 3:51remaining. Hollowell capped a six-play, 67-yard drive with aone-yard dive into the end zone. A two-point conversion attempt wasunsuccessful.

“I didn’t know it would be so easy to run on them,” saidFighting Jackets head coach Roe Burns. “I thought it would be acompetitive game. Terrell (May) ran the ball real hard.

“I think the turning point came when Chris Fuller went in at therover position (on defense) and our usual rover (Moak) moved tocornerback,” Burns noted. “That kept Terrell from having to play ondefense after the first series of plays.”

Jacket’s defensive coach Seth Lofton praised his players. “Wehad a good week of practice,” he said. “We’re starting to play as ateam and it’s showing on the field.”

Hollowell led the Cathedral running game with 128 yards and twotouchdowns on 15 carries. McDonough completed 21 of 43 passes for207 yards and two scores. He was intercepted five times.

Hall had nine receptions for 115 yards to lead the Green Wavereceiving corps. Culbert had four catches for 50 yards and a scorewhile Hollowell hauled in four passed for 21 yards and atouchdowns.

Cathedral registered 13 first downs on the night and waspenalized twice for 15 yards. They recovered their only fumble.Hinson punted three times for a 29-yard average.

Aiding May in the Enterprise running game were Moak with threecarries for 62 yards and a touchdown. Drew Waldrop.

Moak had 12 tackles to top the Fighting Jackets’ defenders.Colby Sullivan had 11 stops and Powell picked up nine.

Moak and McKee both had two interceptions in the game whilePowell picked off one pass. Bronson Russell and Ky Mathis both hadone quarterback sack.

Enterprise had five first downs in the game. The Jackets werewhistled for 80 yards on eight penalties. They lost their onlyfumble. Hopkins punted three times for an average of 30 yards.

Cathedral remains on the road for its next game as the Greeniestravel to Stringer. Enterprise hits the road to D’Iberville to playMercy Cross in a crucial Region 4-1A game.
