WESSON — The Jones County Junior College Bobcats bring anexplosive passing attack and a strong defense to Co-Lin’s StoneStadium Thursday night. Kickoff for the South Division game is 7p.m.

Co-Lin head coach Glenn Davis said his Wolfpack (1-3, 0-3) mustbe ready to play exceptional pass defense against the Bobcats (1-3,1-2). “Their receivers are very good. They have made some mistakeswhich beat themselves. They are kind of young, just like us.”

Pulling the trigger in the JCJC offense is sophomore quarterbackBrent Hyatt (6-2, 205) of West Jones. He has passed for 882 yardsand 3 touchdowns, completing 89 of 142 passes and throwing 3interceptions.

“Their quarterback is a good player,” said Davis. “We need tokeep him from staying in the pocket; make him move around and throwhim out of his rhythm.”

Mainly catching passes for the Bobcats are wide receiversWendell Maye (6-2, 180, fr.) of Dephne, Ala., and Jerrod Gaines(6-0, 200, soph.) of Springfield, Oh. Gaines, who played atCincinnati last year, has caught 31 passes for 209 yards.

At running back, the Bobcats count on Tim Holloway (6-2, 235,fr.) of Seminary, who signed with Mississippi State. Hollowaydidn’t achieve freshman eligibility requirements at MSU.

The Wolves are regrouping after a 28-13 loss at Hinds They havelost three straight games since beating Northwest in their seasondebut.

Asked about improvement goals, Davis said, “I would like to seeus start faster. We played three quarters of good football againstHinds after we got behind 13-0.

“We can give ourselves a chance to win if we start fast,” Daviscontinued. “We self-destructed in the penalty category (10 flagsfor 45 yards) last week. We shot ourselves in the foot.”

Davis said his Wolves are coping with adversity, too. “We aren’tmentally tough enough to overcome that stuff. Our effort has beengood the last couple of weeks.”

Freshman quarterback Cedric Johnson directed Co-Lin with 53yards rushing . He completed 16 of 42 passes for 127 yards and 2touchdowns, both going to freshman wide receiver Bud Chatman.

Running back Rashawn Robinson rushed 8 times for 41 yards.Anthony Chambliss caught 3 passes for 24 yards.

On defense, Alton Dowdel and Blake Spiers intercepted passes forCo-Lin.

Tough On Defense

Always strong on defense, the Bobcats have several outstandingplayers. Cedric Jones (6-6,220, fr.), a lineman from Wayne County,is exceptional.

“They have a couple of other guys up front who are goodplayers,” said Davis. “Their linebacker (Archie Sims) signed withMississippi State.”

Sims (6-1, 220, fr.) is from West Jones and was an all-stater in2004.

Punter Lonnie Starks was named special teams player of the weekafter averaging 48.5 yards on 8 punts, including an 87-yarder.

The Bobcats opened their season with a 44-7 loss to Gulf Coast.They rebounded and nipped Southwest 20-19 at Summit the secondweek. Defending national champion Pearl River whipped the Bobcats28-18 in the third game. They lost 23-7 to Northeast last week.

Parker Dykes coaches Jones County. The Bobcats finished 7-3 lastseason, losing to Pearl River and Hinds. They lost to Blinn (Texas)in the Golden Isles Bowl.
