Charge filed in knife fight

A Brookhaven woman has been charged with aggravated assaultfollowing a Friday night fight at a social club on Martin LutherKing Drive.

Sandra B. Smith, 43, of 401 S. Martin Luther King Drive,apparently grabbed a knife off the bar and began slashing Vencie H.Bell, 39, of Brookhaven, while the two were arguing, BrookhavenPolice Department Capt. Roger Wilson said.

Bell was cut on the head, shoulder and upper shoulder, Wilsonsaid.

“It wasn’t life-threatening, but she had to get some stitches,”he said.

Bell was treated and released from King’s Daughters MedicalCenter, Wilson said.

The knife used in the incident was not found during a search ofthe Brother J’s club Friday night, he said.

“Somebody must have picked it up,” he said. “Witnesses said itwas a small, fixed-blade knife.”

Wilson said investigators were still trying to determine why aknife was on the bar.

Smith was released on a $2,500 bond during the weekend, Wilsonsaid. The case will appear before the grand jury in January.
