Case, Williford lead Loyd Star Hornets over St. Aloysius

Loyd Star senior Tyler Williford pumped in a game-high 22 pointsand sophomore Drew Case fired in 20 points to lead the host Hornetsto a 69-47 win over the Vicksburg St. Aloysius Flashes Tuesdaynight. Case, a sophomore, was tops off the backboards with 11rebounds. He also made 4 steals and blocked a shot.
In the varsity girls game, senior Hailey Ratcliff scored 21points for Loyd Star which fell to St. Al 50-48.
Loyd Star returns home Thursday night, hosting Natchez Cathedralfor a pair of varsity games. The girls game begins at 6 p.m.followed by the boys.
Drew McBrayer coaches the St. Al boys and girls teams.
Loyd Star 69, St. Al 47
The Hornets (1-1) took an early 12-8 lead over the Flashes (0-2)in the first quarter. A 20-15 run put Loyd Star up 32-23 at thehalf. Going into the final frame, the Hornets led the Flashes 48-35before outscoring the visitors 21-12 to secure the win.
“I thought we did a good job for our first home game,” said LoydStar head coach Gene Britt. “There are some things we need to workon, like turnovers and rebounding. I hope we get better every ballgame.
“We need to play good against Natchez Cathedral Thursday,” addedBritt.
Finishing with 9 points and 7 rebounds for the Hornets wasDonovan Case. Rickey Barnes pulled down 5 rebounds, made 4 stealsand blocked 2 shots. Williford also made 4 steals.
Leading the winless Flashes with 19 points was Chase Smith.Smith left the game with 1:49 left in the third quarter aftersustaining an injury, when was a fouled while going in for alayup.
St. Aloysius 50, Loyd Star 48
The Lady Hornets (1-1) jumped on the Lady Flashes (2-0) for a15-14 first-quarter lead. St. Al took advantage of some missedshots to build a 27-22 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, theLady Flashes kept maintained a 6-point, 38-32 edge, going into thefinal frame.
Loyd Star cut the deficit to 2 points, 50-48, with 12 secondsremaining. St. Al missed a pair of free throws. Then the LadyHornets threw the ball out of bounds with 2.4 seconds left as theLady Flashes held on for the win.
“We played awful,” said Loyd Star girls coach Lori Britt. “Wedidn’t rebound. We didn’t move our feet on defense. We’re a youngteam.”
Freshmen Shannon Chester netted 11 points, grabbed 4 reboundsand made 2 steals for the Lady Hornets. Brittany Brown finishedwith 9 points.
Directing the St. Al girls with 18 points was Annie Breaugh.Scoring 15 points was Sarah Kerut. Finishing with 9 points was AnnBreaugh. Both Breaugh’s are transfers from Porter’s ChapelAcademy.
