BA teams crush Canton

Brookhaven Academy’s varsity basketball teams took two victoriesfrom the visiting Canton Academy Panthers Friday night in John R.Gray Gymnasium.
Betsy Lynch scored 14 points and had three steals as the LadyCougars whipped the Lady Panthers 65-22 to improve to 7-5 on theseason. Corey Dickerson scored 19 points for the Cougars as theyrolled over the Panthers 78-31 to improve to 6-1.
Brookhaven 65, Canton 22
Lady Cougars coach Barry Gray saw his team race to a 18-4 leadafter one quarter, and a 41-6 lead at the half before cruising tothe victory.
“I was pleased with our effort,” said Gray. “Drew Holland(Tigner) played well in her first game. We needed another playerdown in the lane to help with rebounding. It was a good effort allthe way around.”
Tigner, a freshman, joined the varsity team for the first timeall season in an effort to solidify the Lady Cougars interior game.She finished with 6 points, four steals, and 2 rebounds.
Jessica Diamond added 8 points, and Rachel West scored sevenpoints and pulled down 7 rebounds to help the Lady Cougars to thevictory.
In the boys game, Coach Dale Watts saw his teamtake a 38-20 lead at the half, after leading 14-13 at the end ofthe first quarter. The Cougars’ tough defense proved to be too muchfor the Panthers as they only scored 18 points in the final threequarters of play.
“We started off a little sluggish, but our effort was good,”said Watts. “There is room for improvement on the defensive side ofthe ball, but we’re starting to execute the offense a littlebetter.”
Alan Gray added 13 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals in support ofDickerson. Kurt Perkins scored 12 points and had 3 steals.
Junior High Results
In junior high girls action, Brookhaven smashed Canton 35-12, asNicole Smith and Jordan Langston scored 8 points apiece for theLady Cougars. Hannah Hickman and Eden Prather added 6 points each.Casey Tate scored 6 points for the Lady Panthers.
Brookhaven hosts Silliman Institute Tuesday for a 4-game set.Tipoff in the first junior high game is set for 4 p.m.
