West Lincoln sweeps Loyd Star

Thursday night’s opening round of the Lincoln County Round RobinTournament provided a second meeting between the West Lincoln Bearsand the Loyd Star Hornets.

On Nov. 18 at Loyd Star, the Hornets lost a close 2 point, 61-59decision to the Bears while the West Lincoln girls produced a12-point, 63-51 victory over Loyd Star.

In last night’s first 2 games, the West Lincoln boys knocked offLoyd Star 79-54 and the Lady Bears held off the Lady Hornets for a39-28 victory.

West Lincoln 79, Loyd Star 54

“It was a total team effort,” said West Lincoln coach LaneYoung. “We pressed them full court and it bothered them.”

West Lincoln (6-2) jumped out quickly for a 26-9 lead in thefirst quarter over Loyd Star (4-3). At halftime, the Bearscommanded a 45-19 lead.

The Bears had 4 players in double figures. Leading with agame-high 20 points, including 5 treys, was Shane Lynch. BradleighRice pumped in 17 points, Scoring 16 points was Stephen Jonesfollowed by Aaron Shaw with 14.

“We played really bad,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene (Moochie)Britt after the game. “West Lincoln wanted it more than us tonight.They got a head of us and we folded.”

The Hornets were led by Drew Case with 17 points. Firing in 15points was Tyler Williford.

West Lincoln 39, Loyd Star 28

“I thought we played a good half-court game,” said Young. “Wecut down on the turnovers.”

Loyd Star post player Hailey Ratcliff’s field goal and freethrow put the first points on the scoreboard at the 6:08 mark inthe first quarter. The Lady Hornets were tied with the Lady Bears4-4 till a 3-point shot by Britnee Smith put West Lincoln up 7-4and the visiting team never relinquished the lead the remainder ofa low-scoring ball game.

West Lincoln (4-4) led Loyd Star 11-16 at the end of the firstquarter and 17-12 at the half. The Lady Bears lost Candy Herringwho had 10 points with 28 seconds left in the first half to anankle injury.

Going into the final frame, West Lincoln commanded a 10-point,25-15 lead. Loyd Star’s Dakota Brooks missed the game due to a kneeinjury.

Erica Shaw’s 12 points led the Lady Bears. Smith finished with 7points.

The 2-5 Lady Hornets, coached by Lori Britt, got 12 points fromRatcliff. Shannon Chester finished with 8 points.
