BA cruises past Copiah

GALLMAN — Brookhaven Academy’s basketball teams made theirannual trip to Gallman Saturday afternoon to face Copiah Academy asthey do every year in the final game before the Christmas holidays.Brookhaven’s Lady Cougars blasted the Lady Colonels 49-25.

In the varsity boys game, Brookhaven topped Copiah 76-64. Bothteams don’t play again until the Brookhaven Academy Holiday Classicscheduled for Dec. 27-30.

Kellie Brady scored 11 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and hadthree steals to lead the Lady Cougars as they improved to 11-6 onthe season. Drew Holland Tigner and Maddie Allen each scored 9points in support of Brady. Tigner had 4 steals and Allen hadthree.

The Lady Cougars held a slim 15-12 lead after one quarter, butBrookhaven coach Barry Gray saw his team outscore Copiah 16-3 inthe second quarter before cruising on to the victory.

“We played a match-up zone, and it forced them to shoot fromfarther out than they wanted to,” said Gray. “I was pleased withour effort. We were able to get a little momentum heading into theChristmas break.”

Julie Hankins scored 9 points to lead the Lady Colonels. BeccaBoone followed with 6.

Brookhaven 76, Copiah 64

In the varsity boys game, Jeremy Winborne scored a game-high 19points, plus seven steals, five assists and five rebounds to leadBrookhaven as the Cougars improved to 11-1 on the season.

Alan Gray and Kurt Perkins each scored 14 points and T-Boy Lynchadded 11 points as the Cougars were able to put four players indouble figures.

“They were just a step or two faster than we were,” said CopiahCoach Michael McAnally. “Brookhaven is a great team. They haveexperience and play with a lot of intensity. They’re number one inthe state and defending state champions for a reason.”

Center Seth Davis led Brookhaven in rebounding, pulling down 10boards in the game.

Jake Guess led Copiah with 18 points as the Colonels fell to 3-5on the season. Bennett Wilson followed with 17 points.

Junior Boys Results

Brookhaven lost a heart-breaker 49-46 to the Colonels. TrippJolly hit a Cougar trey with 12 seconds left in the game, tying thegame at 46. But Bryce Guess hit a trey of his own for Copiah as thefinal horn sounded, giving Copiah the victory.

Garrett Posey led Brookhaven with 12 points. Jake Reed followedwith 10.

Guess led Copiah with 17 points. Been Boone followed with 11points for the Colonels.

In junior high girls action, Brookhaven thumped Copiah 29-16, toimprove to 11-1 on the season.

Katie Beth Case scored 8 points and Hannah Hickman added 7points to lead Brookhaven.

Madeline Cline scored 6 points for Copiah.
