Lawrence Co. boys win; LCHS girls fall to McComb

MONTICELLO — Lawrence County and McComb split a varsitybasketball doubleheader Tuesday night . In girls’ action, theMcComb Lady Tigers won by a score of 55-33. Lawrence County claimedthe boys’ game, recovering from an early deficit to earn a 65-51win.

Bobby Lee’s LCHS Cougars ran their record to 11-4 overall, and3-1 in Division 6-4A play, as senior center Craig Tyler explodedfor 31 points and 11 rebounds.
McComb sizzled at the start, outscoring Lawrence County 23-9 inthe first quarter. After that, it was as if the two teams switcheduniforms. The Cougars, powered largely by Tyler’s strong insideplay, outscored the Tigers 56-27 the rest of the way.
Dominique West had 15 points and 5 assists for the winningCougars, while Lenquez Smith added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4assists. Shot-blocking specialist Kelvin Rogers added 6 more to histotal, and Oliver Peyton handed out 4 assists.
McComb, under coach Hilton Harrell, fell to 12-4 overall, and2-2 in the division. The Tigers were led by Otis Smith, who hit 4three-pointers in the game.
McComb 55, Lawrence Co. 33
The girls contest was also a game of turnarounds, though thelead never actually changed hands. McComb broke to an early 11-1lead and never trailed.
In the third quarter, a Lawrence County run cut McComb’s lead to2 points, at 27-25. After that, the Lady Tigers regained command,totally dominating the fourth quarter.
With the win, coach Angela Johnson’s Lady Tigers improved to 8-8overall, and 3-1 in Division 6-4A. Sharie Quinn and Alisha Raybornled McComb with 10 points each. LaAntria Martin added 9 points, andApril Johnson scored 8.
Lawrence County, under coach Vicki Rutland, fell to 6-9 overall,and 2-2 in the division. Jonika Walton and Monique Collins each had9 points for the Lady Cougars. Walton, a Biloxi High transfer, alsohad 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
