Jones powers Lady Panthers; BHS boys fall to Terry

Brookhaven junior guard Jermecia Jones tossed in a career andgame-high 16 points, as the Lady Panthers captured the Division6-4A regular season title Tuesday night in James A. SinclairGymnasium with a 59-40 victory over the Terry Lady Bulldogs.
Also with the win, the Lady Panthers received the No. 1-seed anda first-round bye in the division tournament; being held inSinclair Gym on Feb. 13-17.
In the varsity boys game, the Terry Bulldogs sacked 6 treys onthe night to muster a 63-48 victory over the BrookhavenPanthers.
Brookhaven hosts McComb Friday on Senior Night in the finalregular season home game. Terry finishes its season Friday andSaturday in the Clinton Tournament.
Brookhaven 59, Terry 40
The Lady Panthers (15-14, 9-2) climbed above the .500 mark forthe first time this season, in addition to claiming the regularseason title and No. 1-seed in the district tournament.
“I am glad that we got the win,” said Ole Brook head coach BillyHolmes. “We played well tonight, except for free throw shooting andrebounding.”
Holmes was referring to his team’s dismal 9 of 22 performancefrom the charity stripe. Terry won the battle on the boards(35-22), including a whopping 15-5 edge on the offensive glass.
Terry (13-11, 8-4) found itself on the wrong end of an 11-9deficit heading into the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs, coachedby Bobby Coleman, sacked 9 free throws in the opening 8 minutes.Jones also dished out 3 assists
Jones came off of Holmes’ bench in the second half and put on ashooting clinic, canning all 8 shots she attempted. She had 14points in the second half.
“Tonight was a good night to have a breakout game,” said thesoft-spoken Jones following the game. “We did not do a good jobshooting free throws.”
Jones and her teammates led 23-19 at halftime and 37-28 enteringthe final stanza.
Lending support for Ole Brook was Swayze Black with 12 points,10 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 2 steals and 2 assists. BlancheWilson had 6 assists, while Angel Weston had 4.
The Lady Panthers shot 50 percent (25 of 50) from the fieldoverall, but were 9 of 22 (40 percent) from the charity stripe.Brookhaven committed 15 turnovers, with Terry making 24.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Chiquita Harrison with 12 points,14 rebounds and 2 steals. Ariel Dawkins had 10 points and 5rebounds. Terry shot 22 percent (9 of 41) from the field and had asizzling 22 of 26 performance (85 percent) from the free throwline.
“We thought that we could run with them,” said Coach Coleman whois in in first year at Terry. “We could not get into an offensiverhythm. Their height was a definite factor in the game.”
Terry 63, Brookhaven 48
The Panthers (6-23, 2-9) kept this game close, despite trailing13-10 after one period and 25-22 at the intermission.
Ole Brook, coached by Ronald Hines, could not find an answer forthe Bulldog duo of Breelan Bryant and Terrencio Powell, as theycombined for 41 of Terry’s 63 points. The pair also combined tosack 6 treys.
The Bulldogs (14-11, 9-3), coached by Reginald Magee,outdistanced the Panthers 38-26 in the second half to pick up thewin.
The Panthers trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half,before mounting a rally in the fourth period. Ole Brook got asclose as 7 points at 49-43 on a basket by Charles Rancifer withover 3 minutes left in the game. Terry went on a 13-5 run to closeout the game.
“We had poor execution down the stretch,” said Coach Hinesfollowing the game.
Bryant tossed in 21 points (5 treys), while Powell added 20points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards26-24, committing only 11 turnovers. Terry scored 10 points off oftheir 13 offensive rebounds.
Both teams shot 42 percent from the field on 19 of 45 shooting.Ole Brook made 8 of 18 (44 percent) from the charity stripe, whileTerry went 19 of 29 (66 percent). The Panthers had 18 miscues.
Rancifer paced Brookhaven with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 6assists. Tory Richardson added 12 points and 2 steals. Jerome Averydished out 3 assists.
