Lady Hornets take third in 2A

RIDGELAND — Freshman forward Shannon Chester nailed thegame-winning trey to give the Loyd Star Lady Hornets a 37-36 winover host St. Andrew’s girls Friday night in the consolationbracket of the Division 6-2A basketball tournament. Chesterfinished the game with 12 points, 4 steals and 3 assists.

In the boys game, Hinds AHS pressed Loyd Star the entire game tosecure the Division 6-2A crown with an 83-34 victory. The Hornetsfinished No. 2 in Region 6-2A.

The Loyd Star girls (12-16) finished No. 3 in Region 6-2A andtravel to Lumberton (No. 2 Div. 8-2A) Monday night in the firstround of the South Mississippi 2A playoffs. The game begins at 7p.m.

The Hornets (14-12) will host No. 3 East Marion out of Division8-2A Tuesday night. The game starts at 7.

Loyd Star 37, St. Andrew’s 36

“We were trailing by two points when Shannon made her 3-pointerthat put us up by one,” said Loyd Star girls coach Lori Britt.

According to Coach Britt, St. Andrew’s got the ball back withunder a minute left and missed several shots. Loyd Star got therebound with 10 seconds left and held on to win the game.

St. Andrew’s (17-13) went up 10-6 in the first quarter and 20-19at the half. Loyd Star outscored the hosts 18-16 in the second halfto secure the victory.

“We played real hard last night,” added Britt.

The top scorer for the Loyd Star girls was senior forward HaileyRatcliff with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Laura Brittpulled downs 6 rebounds followed by Haley Sones with 5.

Rachel Sanders led St. Andrew’s with 14 points. Olivia Wellsfinished with 11.

Hinds AHS 83, Loyd Star 34

In the boys game, Joseph White directed the No. 1 seededBulldogs with 16 points. Kenderick Washington fired in 15 points.Netting 11 points was Anthony Mayes.

Hinds AHS (26-4) roared out to a 24-7 lead over Loyd Star. Athalftime, the Bulldogs led 40-20 and 64-26 going into the finalframe.

“They physically beat us,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene(Moochie) Britt. “It was rough.”

Leading Loyd Star was senior guard Tyler Williford with 20points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Center Ricky Barnes was tops offthe backboards with 11 rebounds.
