Without much fanfare, the Lincoln County School Board approvedthe 2006-2007 student supply lists Monday.

Board members voted last year to standardize the supply lists, which varied greatly from school to school for the same grades.

Prior to the 2004-2005 school year, board members questioned thenumber and type of supplies teachers were requiring parents topurchase for students. They were also concerned about the cost ofsupplies the district was passing on to parents.

No two lists were the same. In addition, one estimated parents’cost at $25, two at $10 and one did not have an estimate.

Last year, the board not only questioned the need for some ofthe supplies, but also asked why the lists varied so greatly. Boardmembers directed the central office to compose a general list foreach grade that would apply to all schools.

Administrators did not have time to get the lists standardizedprior to the 2005-2006 school year, but eliminated some of thevariance, said Superintendent Terry Brister.

“This is the same as it was after the second time the board sawit last year,” Brister said in presenting the 2006-2007 supplylists.

The supply lists for the next school year are released early soteachers can provide them to students before they return home forsummer break.
