Delaughter’s RBI double lifts Lady Panthers over BC

Sabrina Delaughter said she was just trying to make contact. Thefreshman first baseman did even better, lashing a game-winning, RBIdouble to left field which lifted the Brookhaven Lady Panthers to a2-1 Thursday night victory over Bogue Chitto’s Lady ‘Cats on MartinField.

Delaughter’s 2-out double off BC pitcher Meleah Brown skippedpast the shortstop, allowing Amanda McIntyre to race home with thedecisive run. McIntyre had drawn a walk and stolen second base.

“I just wanted to hit it,” said Delaughter, a bright smilelighting up her face. “The pitch was down the middle. It feltreally good to win.”

The Lady Panthers (7-4) were coming off a disappointing,last-inning loss to Loyd Star in which their defense collapsed.They only made 2 errors against Bogue Chitto.

Ole Brook coach Lisa Covington said she was happy to see herteam come back strong against a tough opponent. “It was a good winfor us, especially after Monday night.

“We got some key hits and Sabrina got a big double for us,”Covington continued. “Bogue Chitto has a good team and bothpitchers pitched well.”

Winning pitcher Ashley Sykes scattered 5 hits. She struck out 3batters and walked none. Sykes was supported by a pair of doubleplays in the first and second innings.

The Lady ‘Cats had taken a 1-0 lead in the third. Chelsey Millersmashed a 2-out triple to center field and came around to score ona fielding error.

Ole Brook tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth. Leadoff batterHannah Lowman beat out a bunt. Terri Hodges provided a sacrificebunt which moved Lowman to second. Brittany Smith was safe on afielding error and Lowman raced home with the tying run.

Brown allowed only 3 hits and struck out 7. She walked 3batters.

Sykes had the other Ole Brook hit when she outran a grounder inthe third. Brown and Sykes have both signed fastpitch scholarshipswith Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

“Brookhaven got the hits when they needed them and got the jobdone,” said Bogue Chitto coach Scott Leggett. “One run wasn’tenough for us to win. We didn’t hit the ball.”

The Lady ‘Cats got singles from Latoya Braxton, Kelli Howard,Candace Avants and Brown. They only left 1 runner on base.

The Brookhaven girls knocked off Bogue Chitto 4-2 in JV action.Karlee Martin and Katie Stewart hit safely for the LadyPanthers.

Ole Brook Tournament

Six games are scheduled in Saturday’s Ole Brook Tournament.Action begins at 10 a.m., with the Lady Panthers playing Loyd Star.Ole Brook plays Franklin County at 11:30 a.m. and McComb at 5:30p.m.

Loyd Star faces McComb at 1 p.m., followed by Franklin Countyversus McComb at 2:30, and Loyd Star vs. Franklin County at 4.

Bogue Chitto resumes play Saturday at West Lincoln, meeting theLady Bears in a JV game at noon and a Division 7-1A varsity test at1. The Lady ‘Cats have rescheduled a varsity doubleheader atNatchez Cathedral for Tuesday.
