Cougars knock off Colonels 3-2

GALLMAN — The Brookhaven Academy Cougars scored thegame-winning run in the top of the eight inning Monday night tobeat the Copiah Academy Colonels 3-2 in varsity baseballaction.
In the top of the eighth, Brookhaven’s Kolby Byrd doubled toleft center field. Steven Covington’s sacrifice bunt moved pinchrunner Kurt Perkins to third. Corey Dickerson singled over theshortstop to score Perkins and win the game.
Brookhaven improved to 9-1 on the season and remain 5-0 indivision play. Stephen Cooksey coached the Cougars.
In the top of the first, the Cougars went up 2-0. Dickersonwalked than advanced to second on a single by Keith Franklin. Bothplayers advanced on a wild pitch. Jeremy Winborne was hit by thepitcher. Paul Davis hit a sacrifice fly t right field to scoreDickerson. Franklin then scored on a wild pitch.
Copiah scored one run in the bottom of the first to cut thedeficit to 2-1. Brock Campbell singled to right. Daniel Simssingled to left. David Brunt reach base on a throwing error andCampbell scored.
In the bottom the seventh, Phillip Douglas singled and Campbellwalked. Brunt was intentionally walked to load the bases. JedStevens walked to score the tying run.
Ben McKinney started for Brookhaven, working two innings with 1unearned run, no strikeouts and no walks. Paul Davis took over inthe third with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Seth Davis pitched theeighth to get the save.
Ryan Vanderslice singled for Brookhaven.
Douglas added 2 more singles for Copiah. Bennett Wilson, BenBoone, David Hobkirk and Sims singled.
