Co-Lin splits with Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves split a South Divisionfastpitch softball doubleheader with the Mississippi Gulf CoastLady Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon.

Co-Lin won the opener 2-0 in eight innings but fell to GulfCoast 7-2 in the finale. The Lady Wolves are 12-6 on theseason.

Co-Lin travels to Southwest Saturday for an afternoondoubleheader. The first game begins at 1 p.m.

Co-Lin 2, Gulf Coast 0

The game was scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. MeganBateman tripled with one out. Following an infield pop-up,designated player Erin Douglass smoked a two-out single to left toscore Bateman. Shortstop Kady King followed with an RBI triple forthe 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Co-Lin defensive replacement LaceyWilliams made a diving catch in right center to stop a Gulf Coastrally.

“This was a big division win on the road for us,” said Co-Linhead coach Allen Kent. “It’s the first time we’ve won at Gulf Coastin my 4 years here. We played flawless defense. Emily (Horne) threwreally well and we got the 2-out clutch hits.”

Horne hurled a 2-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Douglass finished with three hits for the Lady Wolves AnnieSelman and Horne hit safely.

Three big Lady Bulldog bloop singles and three Lady Wolf errorsin the second inning put Co-Lin in the hole in the second game.Gulf Coast scored four unanswered runs for a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves came back to cut the deficit to 4-2 at the endof the fourth. Gulf Coast added a run in the fifth for the 5-2 leadthen put together two more runs in the sixth off a Co-Linerror.

Douglass suffered the loss, giving up 9 hits, striking out 3 andwalking 1.

At the plate, Selman went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Bateman doubledand single with a run scored. Adding a single each were JackieStowe, Douglass and King.

“It was a disappointing loss,” stated Kent. “We made mistakesand they took advantage of it. We made their pitcher look betterthan she was. They the routine plays and we didn’t. We wanted atleast a split on the road and we got it.”
