Columbia Academy stuffs BA 12-4

Visiting Columbia Academy worked their bats well Tuesday nightas they recorded a 12-4 District 4-AA win over Brookhaven Academyin a battle of the Cougar baseball teams. Columbia improved to 11-5and 4-1 while Brookhaven fell to 9-2 and 5-1 with the loss.
Columbia out hit Brookhaven 14-7 at the plate.
“We did not play well,” said Brookhaven Academy coach StephenCooksey. “We were not mentally prepared for this game. Hopefully,this is a wake-up call to my seniors.”
Nathan Wally was the winning pitcher with 5 strikeouts and 2walks. Working in relief was Kasey Gill.
Absorbing the loss was Corey Dickerson with 1 strikeout and 3walks in the first inning. Seth Davis took over with 1 strikeoutand no walked. Following Davis was Ben McKinney and Ty Smith.
“My pitcher pitched the ball well,” said Columbia Academy coachBrandon Thornhill. “My 3rd, 4th and 5th batters put the ball inplay. Everyone was able to hit.”
Columbia led 5-0 in the first inning, then went up 8-0 in thesecond and 10-1 in the third. At the end of five, the visitorscommanded a 12-3 lead over the hosts.
There was a controversial call in the first inning when the homeplate umpire ruled a hit toward left field a home run whileColumbia had the bases loaded, making it a grand slam homer.Brookhaven posted the call and several minutes later the umpirereversed himself and rule it a foul ball.
David Murphy doubled and singled twice for Columbia. HunterFarrar singled three times. Doubling and singling was Ben Selman.Nathan Walley doubled. Kasey Gill singled twice. Hitting safelywere Drew Holmes, Ryan Havard and J.T. Bassett.
Brookhaven got a triple, a double and a single from CoreyDickerson. Kolby Byrd smashed a 2-run home run. Paul Davis doubled,Singling were Ryan Vanderslice and Seth Davis.
Brookhaven travels to Columbia Friday for two games. The juniorvarsity game begins at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game.
