Lincoln County School Board members got a close look at theconstruction of a new building on the West Lincoln AttendanceCenter campus Tuesday during a tour of the school.
School board members annually tour the district’s four campusesto receive updates on the schools from the principals, talk toteachers and students about conditions there and look fordiscrepancies. Board members toured the West Lincoln and Loyd StarAttendance Center campuses Tuesday.
West Lincoln Principal Jason Case said construction on the newbuilding is expected to be completed in July. The approximately12,376 square foot building will house nine classrooms for highschool students and an office area.
A building connected to the cafeteria next to the new buildinghas been torn down and dirt work on a cafeteria extension and techprep classroom began last week, Case said. That project is expectedto be completed prior to the start of the next school year.
Board members expressed some dissatisfaction with a classroombuilding completed last year.
A few minor details, such as touch-ups to the walkway awningsand a low set of lockers in one of the classrooms, were neveraddressed by the contractor after being noted during finalinspections, said Superintendent Terry Brister. Except for a fewminor details, however, board members said the building looked goodand was meeting the school’s needs admirably.
Overall, board members were well-satisfied with what they saw atWest Lincoln and Loyd Star, Brister said.
Board members toured Enterprise Attendance Center March 20, butwere forced to postpone a visit to Bogue Chitto Attendance Centerwhen bad weather moved in.
“We’re going to get to it. We just haven’t set a date yet,” saidDistrict Two Board Member Johnny Hart.
Prior to the tour of West Lincoln Tuesday, board members held aregularly scheduled meeting in the campus Career Center.
The board approved the holiday breaks for the 2006-2007 schoolyear and noted that all schools in the area would again be on thesame schedule.
“I’m so glad we’re going back to our regular schedule,” saidDistrict Three Board Member Joann Holmes. “I’ve had so many peopleask me why we changed ours.”
Brister and school principals had proposed a plan that boardmembers approved for last year’s schedule to move Spring Break tothe last week in March to better accommodate state testingrequirements.
Unfortunately, Brister said Tuesday, the schedule may havesucceeded in that goal, but it meant only the Lincoln County andBrookhaven school districts had that particular week off. All otherdistricts in the area, including Copiah-Lincoln Community College, were out of school on a different week.
This caused problems for some parents who had students indifferent districts, such as Lincoln County and Co-Lin, and alsotook away from the enjoyment of some students, who could not travelwith friends in other districts.
“Everybody is the same now,” Brister said of the new schedule.”We’re all on the same page.”
