The red and yellow 1930s model Tilt-A-Whirl at the BrookhavenExchange Club Park has been retired in anticipation of a moreupdated version.

A 1980s model Tilt-A-Whirl will be delivered and installed by anamusement park company from El Dorado, Ark., club officialssaid.

“The amusement company will be installing it so that all safetyprecautions and state law specifications will be met,” said TedRatcliff, Exchange Club member.

The updated Tilt-A-Whirl will have electric breaks and addedfeatures that the older model did not have. Among them is anautomatic stop feature that slows the ride if a person stands upwhile it is in motion.

“The added safety features are a must when children are riding.We are out there to have fun, not get risky with something,”Ratcliff said.

The updated ride will look a lot like the old one, but thesafety features will set it apart. The blue Tilt-A-Whirl will sitin the same location as the old ride and the existing shed willprotect the ride from the elements.

The new Tilt-A-Whirl is expected to be ready well in advance ofthe club’s annual fair later this year.

The Exchange Club Fair will operate Saturday, July 29, close onSunday and July 31 through Aug. 5. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m.and close at 10 p.m.

The activities at the park will include rides such as the rollercoaster, kiddie cars, train, ferris wheel and merry-go-round. Otherpopular attractions are booths and food.

“We have all the foods you would have at a state fair; cottoncandy, corn dogs, hamburgers and all that,” said fellow club memberPete Szczublewski.

The 50-plus members of the Brookhaven Exchange Club and a hostof volunteers will run the park for the seven-day fair. Allproceeds go to local charities and the upkeep of the park.
