One killed, one hurt in Sunday house fire

A weekend fire in Monticello resulted in one fatality and oneinjury, authorities said.

The Monticello Fire Department responded at 3:23 p.m. Sunday toa house fire at 5463 Highway 587.

“By the time we arrived, the house was fully involved,” saidHugh Summers, Monticello Fire Department firefighter. “The fire waseverywhere.”

An elderly woman was killed in the house fire. No names havebeen released because identification of the body has not yet beenmade.

“We are trying to make a positive ID,” said Lawrence CountyCoroner Sidney Fortenberry.

Fire department officials said a young girl was flown to a burncenter in Atlanta, Ga., for treatment of her injuries. Officialssaid the young girl was reported to have second- and third-degreeburns on 70 percent of her body.

State Fire Marshal Jim Woodard and Lawrence County Sheriff’sDepartment Investigator Ray Smith were called to conduct a formalinvestigation on the house fire. The cause remains unknown, countyofficials said.
