Supervisors approved a plan by the Zetus Volunteer FireDepartment Monday that may bring lower insurance premiums toresidents of the district.

The plan changes the district into a rated district. The changemeans state fire marshals and insurance officials will take asurvey of fire hydrants and other factors to determine a firerating, which determine fire insurance premiums, said LincolnCounty Fire Coordinator Clifford Galey.

Unrated districts are automatically considered a 10, which isthe worst. Galey believes the district could qualify for a ratingof 9 or better.

“The district could even go as low as Class 8,” he said.

The change into a rated district will not raise property taxes,Galey said, but should amount to a savings in insurance premiums. Apublic meeting must be held before final approval can be granted,Galey said, to answer any questions residents may have about theproposed change.

Supervisors will address the public on Aug. 7 during theregularly scheduled board meeting, which begins at 9 a.m.

East Lincoln, Hog Chain and Heuck’s Retreat volunteer firedepartments are working on similar plans, Galey said.

In other matters, County Attorney Bob Allen assured supervisorsthat newly appointed officers of the Lincoln County Multi-PurposeComplex Commission are insured against individual liability in theevent of a lawsuit.

Allen had said at a previous meeting of the board that hebelieved they were in response to a letter from Commission ChairmanPat McCullough citing members’ concerns.

County Administrator David Fields said he had also spoken withthe insurance underwriter and was assured the any entity created bythe board automatically received such coverage.
