Natchez captures district title

NATCHEZ — The Natchez All-Stars rebounded from an opening roundloss and shut out Summit twice, claiming the Dixie Youth BaseballMajor League District Six Tournament championship at Duncan Park.Natchez advances to State Tournament at Magee after an 8-0 Mondaynight victory over Summit.

The state tourney begins July 20 and runs through July 25.Natchez won the DYB 11s state title last year. Natchez was a 5-0winner over Summit on Saturday night.

Monday night, Natchez swung the big bats and jumped on Summitstarting pitcher Justin Mercier for a quick 5 runs on 4 hits.Garrett Wallace (3 K, 3 BB, 3 hits, 3 runs) took over on the moundwith 2 out in the bottom of the 1st, but the damage was done.

Summit’s defense was solid, committing only 2 errors on thenight, but the offense couldn’t overcome the power of the Natchezlefty Scott Turner (8 K, 1 BB, 2 hits, 0 runs). Giovanni Dentpitched the final 2 innings in relief of Turner, limiting Summit to1 hit.

In the bottom of the 1st Travon Chatmon was plunked by a Mercierpitch for a pass to 1st. He stole 2nd on a passed ball. JakeBrumfield was then issued a base on balls putting runners at thecorners. A double steal was executed perfectly, moving Brumfield to2nd and allowing Chatmon to scamper home with the first run.

Dent took the next pitch to right field where it bounced overthe fence for an RBI ground rule double. Scott Turner and JohnnySmith followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Not to be outdone,Trevor Farmer bounced another Mercier pitch out of the park. HisRBI ground rule double scored Smith for a 5-0 Natchez lead.

Wallace took over on the mound and got the next batter on aground out.

The last Natchez run of the night came in the bottom of the 5th.Lee Fairbanks was awarded 1st base after he was grazed by a pitch.Tanner Martin reached on a 2-out error and scored on a Chatmon RBIsingle. Wallace mowed down the next Natchez batter, leaving 2runners stranded.

Summit struggled at the plate, tapping out only 3 hits, singlesby Garrett Wallace, Justin Holmes and James Michael Schmidt.

Natchez committed only 1 error on the night but stranded 5runners on base.
