Brookhaven 14s, 13s win in state action

LAUREL — The Brookhaven All-Stars produced a key 6-5 must winover Columbia Monday afternoon in the loser’s bracket of the DixieBoys 13s Baseball State Tournament.
Brookhaven faces at Petal at 4 p.m. In the late game, unbeatenLaurel-Jones County meets Wayne County.
Brookhaven scored two runs in the second and four in the thirdfor the 6-0 lead. Columbia scored four runs in the fifth and one inthe seventh.
Winning pitcher Gib Britt pitched four innings, recording eightstrikeouts, four walks, three hits and four runs allowed in thefifth inning. Gage Wilson worked the final three inning with onestrikeout, three walks, four hits and allowed one run in theseventh inning.
Brookhaven, coached by Dale Lowery, finished with 5 hits. Wilsontripled and singled. Brandon Allen doubled. Tyler Lumley and Brittsingled.
In the bottom of the seventh, Columbia had the tying andgo-ahead run on second and third base. The Columbia player on thirdbase came too far off the bag then stumbled as Brookhaven catcherMatt Smith catcher threw to third baseman Brandon Allen who madethe tag for the win out and secure the win.
14s Post Win
Unbeaten Brookhaven (2-0) won 13-9 over Laurel-Jones County inthe Dixie Boys 14s Baseball State Tournament at Taylorsville.
Brookhaven is off today and resumes play Wednesday at 7 p.m.against Perry County. Terry Britt coaches the Brookhaven 14s.
Tyler Case powered Brookhaven at the plate with two doubles andwas hit by pitch. Brett Rushing went 4-for-4, ripping two doublesand two singles and a walk. Colton Laird singled twice and waswalked twice. T.J. Floyd doubled and singled. Cody Smith singledand was walked. Zach Williams doubled and was hit by a pitch. J.J.Jones hit safely.
Laird pitched four innings with three strikeouts for the win.Rushing worked the next 2 2/3 innings, striking out three batters.Michael Martin came in from center field to strike out the finalbatter of the game.
