Co-Lin players report Friday

WESSON — The big day is here for Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege head football coach Glenn Davis and his coaching staff.Friday morning, Davis and his staff will open the doors to thefield house and dormitory as 80 players arrive to prepare for the2006 football season.

“We are glad to have them all here,” said Davis. “This will thebest football team I have had since I have been back. We’re in thetoughest division in the state.”

Assistant coaches for the 2006 season include Calvin Green,Brett Shufelt and Carson Jeffers. Volunteer coaches are DicenzoMiller, Terrell Grindle and Brian Hayes. Grindle and Hayes are newto the staff.

The players have a busy schedule tomorrow. They check in withthe coaches and get their dorm room assignments. In the afternoon,the players take their physicals, followed by a running test.

Following the tests, the players will don a coat and tie to havetheir photographs made for the football program and annual. Theplayers will have supper followed by an orientation period. Theplayers will break into groups with coaches and have positionmeetings.

Saturday morning, the coaches and players will do a walk throughin T-shirts and shorts. They are not allowed to have a football onthe field according to Davis.

The players will practice Saturday afternoon and begininstalling their offense and special teams.

After three days of practice in T-shirts and shorts, the Wolveswill don full football gear and begin working out on the fourthday. All practices begin at 3:30 p.m. each afternoon.

Over the next few weeks, Davis will have to cut the team down to55 players and a 10-man practice squad before the first game.

There are some specific areas that the Wolves will be working onto get ready for the season opener. Key positions held by thegraduated sophomores must be filled.

“We lost a lot of offensive linemen and linebackers,” saidDavis. “We are going to be fairly young on both sides of the ball.Hopefully, we will be better in the skilled areas.”

Co-Lin plays its season opener at Stone Stadium on Thursdaynight, Aug. 31. The Wolves host the Northwest Rangers. Kickoff is 7p.m.
