Texas eliminates Brookhaven all-stars

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Brookhaven 14s lost a 9-5 decisionto Texas (Crosby) Sunday in the second round of the Dixie BoysWorld Series. The loss eliminated Brookhaven, the Mississippi statechampion.

On Saturday, Brookhaven was shut out 13-0 by the Louisiana(Bossier City) state champion in 5 innings.

“We finally got to playing better ball, the kind we are capableof playing,” said Brookhaven manager/head coach Terry Britt. “Wescared them a little bit and they had to bring in their ace.”

Britt said the Texas relief pitcher (Langley) had an 87-mile perhour fastball.

“We wish we could have won at least one game,” said Britt. “Weweren’t hitting on all cylinders.”

Britt said the Brookhaven players went to the outfield fenceafter the game and brought in the Mississippi flag. “I’m real proudof our team. They are a quality group. We also want to thank allthe people in Brookhaven who supported us.”

In the scorching 102-degree heat, Brookhaven used 4 pitchersagainst Texas. Colton Laird started and went 1 inning. BrettRushing relieved Laird and went 2.2 frames. Michael Martin replacedRushing and got the last out in the fourth. Martin went 1.1 inningsand was replaced by Ryan Kennedy.

Brookhaven finished with 11 hits and collected 2 walks. Thirdbaseman Matt Magee, Laird and Rushing singled twice. Tyler Case andCody Smith doubled. T.J. Floyd, Zach Williams. Travis Leggett andMartin singled.

Texas led Brookhaven 8-0 in the fifth inning. Brookhaven plated3 runs in the sixth and 2 more in the seventh.

Pitcher Jason Harjo started for Texas and went 4 innings to getthe win.
