Wesson’s Furr, Hoods win MS/LA golf titles

Wesson’s Warren Hood fired back-to-back sub par rounds andcaptured the Division A title Sunday in the Mississippi/LouisianaJunior Golf Championship at the Brookhaven Country Club. Hood shot66 Saturday and 68 Sunday to finish at 6-under 134 and beatrunner-up Will Black by 4 strokes.

Perry Katherine Furr of Wesson rallied to win the Girls Divisionover Erica Payton of Madison in Sunday’s final round. Furr had a2-round total of 78-76–154 to beat Payton (76-82–158) by 4strokes.

Hunter Hood of Wesson captured Division C with back-to-back 71s,posting a 2-round total of 142. He edged Caleb Westmoreland(88-74-142) in a 1-hole playoff, making par on the first hole.Jacob Ross of Brookhaven was sixth with a 77-76–153.

Furr had trailed Payton by 2 strokes after the first round. Sheplayed steady golf Sunday afternoon. After a 5-over 40 on the firstnine, she made 1 bogey and 8 consecutive pars to claim thetitle.

“The back nine was terrible,” said Furr. “Erica had a bad day,too.”

Warren Hood shot 8 birdies, 2 double bogeys and 2 bogeys Sundayin a scrambling finish. “I hit it out of bounds on No. 13.”

Hood started the round on No. 10 and shot 35 on the front and 30on the back. Today he birdied all four par 5s.

“I was putting pretty good today,” said Hood. He received a $200scholarship and was awarded 2 trophies, recognizing his divisiontitle and the best overall tournament score.

Black is from Calhoun City. Third place went to Chase Smith(72-68–140) of Vicksburg and Nicholas Brown (66-74–140) ofMeridian. Elliot Tramontana (66-75–141) of Meridian was fifth.

Austin Mills (72-78–150) of Brookhaven was 19th.

“It was fun,” said Hunter Hood, a 13-year-old eighth grader. Onthe playoff hole, he rolled in a 3-footer for par. He hit a gapwedge to the green and 2-putted from 10 feet.

Peyton Spring won Division B with a 2-round total of 71-72–143.Barett Edens and Reid Holley both shot 144. James Michael Patti(80-85–165) was 17th. Jennings Mills (77-89–166) of Brookhavenwas 20th.

Nick Pritchard (35-37–72) won Division D. Tucker Jenkins(40-38–78) was runner-up.

Andy Ogletree (37-387–75) won Division E. Wilson Furr wassecond at 42-43–85.
