A Hazlehurst man led Lincoln County authorities on a brief chasebefore crashing in a small field inside the city limits Fridaynight, authorities said.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Rodney Fostersaid authorities were conducting a checkpoint on old Highway 51near Heuck’s Retreat Road Friday night when a northbound ChevroletSuburban approached and made an abrupt turnaround. Deputy KellyPorter then pursued the vehicle into the city around 11:45 p.m.
“We had no idea why he was running,” Foster said.
The Suburban, driven by Quinshaun Terrell Taylor, 25, of 1014Norman Road, Hazlehurst, was traveling in excess of 90 miles perhour when it reached the city limits, authorities said. He wastraveling over 80 mph when he failed to make the turn at the MainStreet and Enterprise Street intersection and left the road.
“He cleared the ditch but he clipped two stumps and that’sapparently what made him start flipping,” Foster said.
The Suburban’s axle was torn from the vehicle and the driver’sside of the vehicle was crushed. The Brookhaven Fire Department’sJaws of Life were called to the scene, but officials said Taylorwas able to crawl out on his own.
Taylor was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center. Informationon his condition was unavailable Saturday, but Foster described hisinjuries as minor.
Foster said authorities learned that Taylor allegedly did nothave his driver’s license and no insurance. Also, whileinvestigators and deputies searched items that were scattered whenthe vehicle crashed, they found a small bag of marijuana.
Also among the debris was a copy of the Mississippi Driver’sManual. Officials said the manual included regulations regardingyielding to blue lights.
“He must not have gotten to that part yet,” Porter quipped.
Foster said Taylor would be charged with several trafficcitations and felony fleeing and failure to yield to blue lightsand sirens.
