Wesson overturns W. Lincoln

WESSON — Powered by senior quarterback Micah Davis and runningback Otho Smith, the Wesson Cobras took advantage of four turnoversby the West Lincoln Bears Friday night on their way to a 51-13 winin Stone Stadium.

Davis completed 5 of 7 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.Smith rushed the football 7 times for 83 yards and three touchdownsand returned a kickoff 80 yards for another TD.

“The offensive line blocked real well,” said Davis after thegame. The linemen Davis complimented were quick tackle TimothyThompson, strong tackle John Knight, strong guard Will Turbo, quickguard Zach Williams and center Matt Smith, “The skilled guys did agood job catching the ball.”

West Lincoln head football coach Brooks Burns complimentedWesson.

“Wesson is very good,” said Burns after the game. “They aregoing to go a long way.”

Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton was impressed with No. 25 (JamieByrd) and No. 33 (Jeremy Byrd) of West Lincoln. “No. 25 and No. 33are good football players. West Lincoln moved the ball on us. Theyshot themselves in the foot with penalties. West Lincoln is a muchimproved ball club.”

Friday night, West Lincoln (0-2) invades Enterprise and Wesson(2-0) hosts Richland for homecoming.

The Cobras jumped out to a 23-0 lead over the Bears in the firstquarter. Smith scored 8 and 14-yard touchdowns. Davis hit sophomoreJamar Sims on a 24-yard pass play for the TD. Davis connected withJoseph Decker on a 2-point conversion. Chris Fink kicked fourstraight extra points after missing the first. John Craft andWilliams forced a safety for 2 points.

In the second quarter, Smith scored a 2-yard TD and Davis foundSims open for a 49-yard touchdown and a 37-0 lead with 55 secondsleft in the first half.

On the final play of the first half, Wesson received a defensivepenalty and West Lincoln had one more chance for a play. With notime on the clock, tailback Lee Jones launched a pass that wascaught by Jamey Byrd off the fingers of two Cobra defenders in theend zone. Freshman Josh Reno kicked the extra point as the Bearswent into the dressing room with a 37-7 deficit.

West Lincoln kicked off to Wesson to start the third quarter.After fumbling the kickoff, Smith scrambled down the left sideline,then across midfield to score an 80-yard kickoff return. KyleKearney took over PAT duties and went 2-2 on the night to give theCobras a 44-7 lead with 11:41 on the clock.

The Cobra’ final score came with 9:17 left in the third quarteron a 35-yard touchdown run by junior running back Ralph Brothernfor the 51-7 lead.

Fourth-quarter action saw the Bears mount their second scoringdrive on the nigh, highlighted by a 6-yard run by Reno who wasworking at quarterback. The try for 2-points failed as West Lincolncut the deficit to 51-13 with 6:23 remaining in the game.

Powering the West Lincoln running game with 13 rushes for 64yards was Reno. Kevin Lofton rushed 9 times for 45 yards.

For the Cobra offense, John Craft rushed 4 times for 37 yards.Brothern finished with 2 carries for 47 yards. Following with 26yards on 2 carries was Sims.

Defensively, Wesson was led by Beau Wilson with 10 tackles.Williams had 9 stops. Making 8 tackles (4 for losses) was Turnbo.Making 7 tackles was Clayton Allen.
