Unbeaten Wesson Cobras notch big homecoming win

WESSON — After the Class 3A Richland Rangers scored the firsttouchdown of the game, the 2A Wesson Cobras went to work. Theunbeaten Cobras scored six unanswered touchdowns on their way to a40-7 homecoming win Friday night over the Rangers in StoneStadium.
Senior running back Otho Smith directed the Wesson running gamewith nine rushes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Ralph Brotherncarried three times for 91 yards and a TD. Quarterback Micah Davisrushed five times for 73 yards and a TD. Finishing with 10 carriesfor 45 yards and a TD was Roy Williams.
“We really challenged them to play a physical ball game thisweek,” said Wesson head football coach Tommy Clopton.”It was ourmost complete game offensively and defensively this year. We talkedall week about not giving up the big play.”
The win improved the Cobras record to 3-0 on the season . TheRangers, coached by Steve Jones, fell to 1-2.
Wesson begins Region 6-2A play Friday night at McLaurin. St.Andrew’s stuffed McLaurin 30-6.
Richland got a break early in the first quarter when itrecovered a Wesson fumble at the Cobra 25. Sophomore wingbackWalter Briggs scored on a 14-yard run for his team’s only touchdownof the game. Briggs kicked the extra point to give the visitors abrief 7-0 lead over the hosts with 5:15 left in the quarter.
Wesson scored on its next possession. Smith exploded down fieldfor a 46-yard touchdown run and Chris Fink kicked his first ( 4 of6) extra point kick to tie the game at 7-all at the 4:24 mark.
The Cobras held the Rangers on defense and took over with lessthan three minutes left in the first quarter. It took several playsto set up a 31-yard touchdown pass from Davis to senior JosephDecker for a 14-7 lead with 1:48 left.
In the second quarter, the Cobras scored three touchdowns topush their lead to 33-7 at halftime. At the 11:50 mark, seniorDaniel Watson blocked a fourth down punt and recovered the ball atthe Richland 21. Smith scored his second TD of the game on aneight-yard run for a 21-7 lead at the 11:41 mark.
Richland drove to the Wesson one-yard line, then fumbled theball into the end zone where the Cobras recovered. From their own20, the Cobras drove and scored on a one-yard plunge by Davis andpushed its lead to 27-7 with 3:59 remaining.
The final TD of the second quarter came after another break forWesson when junior Ralph Brothern recovered a Ranger fumble at theCobra 26-yard line with 3:10 remaining in the first half. Williamswent over the right side for the six points.
Richland came out in the third quarter and tried an onside kickthat failed. The Cobras drove from their own 35, highlighted by a37-yard explosive run by Brothern for the final touchdown.
Davis completed 2 of 4 passes for 39 yards for the Cobras,including a touchdown. The other reception was by Watson for eightyards.
Defensively, junior linebacker Beau Wilson ledthe Cobras with 14 tackles. Williams made 10 tackles and caused afumble. Making 9 tackles and two sacks was Will Turnbo. Smith andWilliams forced a fumble. Recovering a fumble were DominiqueJohnson and Brothern.
Clopton was pleased with the defense holding Richland to justone touchdown.
“The defense really stepped it up,” said Clopton. “We played ourbest defensive game of the year.”
