Bassfield holds off Wesson for 16-12 win

WESSON — Bassfield got a pair of inside-the-park grand slamhome runs at the right time as the Lady Yellow Jackets knocked offthe Wesson Lady Cobras 16-12 in region slowpitch softballaction.

The win improved Bassfield’s record to 10-7 on the season.Wesson falls to 5-10 overall and remains winless in the region at0-3.

“We gave up too many runs,” said Bassfield coach Mandell Echolsafter the win. “We hit the ball well. The younger girls playedwell.”

A five-run scoring spree in the top of the sixth inning gaveBassfield a 13-11 lead over Wesson. The Lady Jackets added threemore runs in the seventh for the 16-11 lead. The Lady Cobras scoredone in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 16-12.

“We hit the ball well,” said Wesson coach Ron Kessler. “We hadtoo many mistakes.”

The Lady Cobras outhit the Lady Jackets 19-14. Wesson committedfive errors to Bassfield’s three.

The lead went back and forth several times. Wesson led 3-0 inthe first then trailed Bassfield 6-5 in the second. The Lady Cobraswent back up 7-6 in the third inning. Following a scoreless fourth,the Lady Jackets and Lady Cobras scored two runs apiece in thefifth as the hosts held on to a 1-run, 9-8, lead over thevisitors.

Bassfield exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth for a13-9 lead. A pair of runs by Wesson cut the deficit to 13-11 goinginto the seventh.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bassfield first baseman Marissa Hallwas injured after Wesson’s Stacey Lowery dove back to first baseand jammed her knee into Hall’s neck while she was trying to catcha low throw. Hall was taken by ambulance to King’s Daughter MedicalCenter for observation after a 25-minute delay.

Leading Wesson with a two-run home run and a single was losingpitcher Nikki McCardle. A triple and two singles were smashed byChristina Fink. Ripping three singles was Julie Berry. SummerEasterling, Leah Greer and Stacey Lowery each singled twice. AmandaPrice doubled and singled. Ann Shelby Davis, Dallas Jackson andJessica Haynes singled. McCardle struck out one and walked one.

For Bassfield, Clarissa Williams and Bertha Thompson led with anISTP grand slam homer and a two singles apiece. Singling threetimes was Melody Wilson. Asala Gay, Danties Reese, KeKathra Taylor,Erica Blackmon, Jameshia Olive, Chelsa Jones and Hall had twosingles apiece. Olive was the winning pitcher with one strikeoutand three walks.
