City to be featured in ‘Southern Living’ article

“There it is,” photographer Gary Clark said as he lined up thedesired picture of a stack of Bob’s Sandwich Shop’s famous flat hotdogs.

Chamber of Commerce officials hope “Southern Living” readerslooking for a place to visit will say “there it is” aboutBrookhaven when the city is featured in the magazine next year.Clark visited Brookhaven Thursday to take pictures to accompany atravel article that is scheduled to appear in the September 2007issue.

“Everything we do is about a year out,” Clark said regardingmagazine planning.

In addition to Bob’s, Clark and Chamber of Commerce ProgramDirector Kay Burton visited the Mississippi School of the Artscampus, Janie’s Pastry, the Posey Place and took a walking tour ofthe city’s Victorian district. Burton said a similar tour would beplanned for the magazine article’s writer, who is expected to cometo Brookhaven later.

“I think it’s wonderful being featured in a publication aswidely read as ‘Southern Living.'” Burton said. “I think it willbring a lot of people to Brookhaven.”

“Southern Living” is a quality publication read by peoplelooking for places to visit, Burton said.

“Whatever they see in there, they go and seek out,” Burton said.”This exposure will put Brookhaven on the map in a way it’s notbeen showcased before.”

Clark, who has been in photography more than 20 years, wasimpressed during his visit. He said the people were very friendlyand he commented on the Posey Place, which specializes in homemadesoap and other items.

“That soap smells wonderful,” Clark said.

Burton mentioned their visit to the MSA campus, where Clarkphotographed students having class around the historic belltower.

“I think we got some really good shots there,” she said.

Clark even donated a piece of photography equipment, a lensbaby,to the school. A lensbaby is a lens that allows one part of a phototo be in sharp focus while the remainder is gradually blurred.

“The students were really interested in it,” Burton said.

During the stop at Janie’s, Burton said Clark got a few picturesof Pete Byrd, the downtown delivery man and one of its notedpersonalities.

“That’ll be fun,” Burton said.

While nervously tidying up the restaurant before Clark’s visit,Bob’s Brenda Allen was excited to be included for the magazinearticle.

“I think we’re special,” Allen said about Bob’s and its uniquemenu item being featured.

Burton said she appreciated property owners and city officialsfor their efforts in making the city look good for thephotographer’s visit. She was optimistic the efforts would pay offin good publicity for Brookhaven in the magazine article.

“I think we’re going to get some good exposure from it,” Burtonsaid.
