Lady ‘Cats drain Lake

BOGUE CHITTO — The Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats swept the Lake LadyHornets 5-0 and 20-4 Tuesday night in the best-of-three series inthe opening round of the Class 1A state slowpitch softballplayoffs.

Bogue Chitto (26-2) travels to Puckett Saturday for the secondround of the playoffs.

In the first game, Bogue Chitto outhit Lake 9-3. The Lady ‘Catscommitted five errors to Lake’s one.

“We did not hit the ball well,” said Bogue Chitto head coachScott Leggett. “We did not challenge them. We hit the ball right tothem.”

Bogue Chitto led 3-0 in the first inning, then added two moreruns in the fifth for the 5-0 lead and eventual win.

Powering the Lady ‘Cats with a pair of doubles was ChelseyMiller. Dori Hall ripped three singles. Collecting a pair ofsingles was LaToya Braxton. Devon Welch and Jessie Millersingled.

Braxton (2 Ks, 0 BBs) got the win. Tracy Wolfe (0 K, 1 BB) tookthe defeat.

For Lake, Jennifer Ferguson, Karley Mitchell and AmandaWilliamson singled.

“We played very good defense, but we did not hit the ball,” saidLake coach Luke Cotnam.

Bogue Chitto 20, Lake 4

The Bogue Chitto bats came to life in the second game, poweredby Shaquille Burton’s 3-run home run in the first inning as thehosts forged a 6-0 lead. Burton slugged a 2-run homer in the fourthfor an 11-4 advantage.

The Lady ‘Cats tacked on nine unanswered runs in the top of thefifth to secure the win.

Contributing to the Lady ‘Cats win with a home run and a pair ofsingles was Hall. Welch singled four times. Howard tripled anddoubled. Candace Avants and Caitlin Owen both doubled and singled.Hitting two singles was Chelsey Miller. Kimberlee Thomas hitsafely.

“We hit the ball better in this game,” added Leggett. “We muststay on a roll.”

Lake got two singles from Lauren Bradshaw, Cooksey and Ferguson.Doubling was Williamson. Christina Gibbs, Laura Taylor and HannahClay singled.

“We got beat,” stated Cotnam. “Bogue Chitto hit the ball and wedid not. Everybody on the Bogue Chitto lineup hit the ball verywell. I wish Bogue Chitto the best of luck in the playoffs.”

Lake finishes with a 13-7 record.

On the mound, Braxton earned the win. Wolfe absorbed theloss.
