Williams steps up in Wesson’s victory

WESSON — Wesson fullback Roy Williams took up the slack whenteammate Otho Smith went down with a leg injury Friday night.Williams rushed 22 times for 148 yards and one touchdown, leadingthe Cobras to a big 34-14 win over the Amite County Trojans.

For his performance, Williams has been selected The DAILYLEADER’s Offensive Player of the Week for the seventh week of the2006 season.

Williams (5-10,180, jr.) also starred on defense. He returned aninterception 18 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown which helpedthe Cobras (6-1, 2-0) hand Amite County its first loss of theseason in a Region 6-2A showdown.

Williams said he like being named Offensive Player of the Week.”It feels good. I want to thank our quarterback (Micah Davis) forgetting me the ball.”

Williams runs a 4.9 in the 40-yard dash. In the weight room, hebench presses 255 pounds and squats 490.

“Roy has gotten better and better as the season went along,”said Wesson head football coach Tommy Clopton. “He has become astronger, more physical player. Our offense is centered around thefullback position.

“Roy has good vision and quick feet,” continued Clopton. “He canaccelerate through the hole and he picks up his blocks realwell.”

When asked about his primary responsibility at running back,Williams replied,”to gain yards as much as I can and score.”

The play Williams scored his 11-yard touchdown on was 24-6. “Iback down as the quarterback leads past the end.”

Williams’ favorite play is the 20 trap which relies on hisspeed.

“I cut back to the center real fast,” Williams explained. “Youhave to have pretty good speed. The linebackers are fast. When Istep up in the hole, I’m usually gone and the linebackers can’t getto me.”

While playing linebacker last week, Williams picked off a passfrom Amite County quarterback Jeremy Snowden and scored a keytouchdown that secured the win for the Cobras. “He (Snowden) threwit to the tight end. He was running a post. He ran by me and Ipicked it off and ran it the other way.”

Williams credited the Cobra offensive line for his scoringsuccess.

“I’d like to thank my offensive line,” stated Williams. “If theydidn’t block, I probably wouldn’t have scored my touchdown. Andthank my quarterback, too.”

The Wesson offensive line includes Bubba Thompson, weak tackle;John Knight, strong tackle; Will Turnbo, strong guard, Matt Smithat center and Zach Williams, weak guard,

Williams is looking forward to playing standout runner BernardBlackmon and the St. Andrew’s Saints Friday night at Ridgeland.Blackmon has been talking on the Web, myspace.com, about the gamewith Wesson.

“There are lot of people who claim no one can stop Blackmon,”said Williams. “On My Space, he says they will run over us. We havea fast defense. I think he is going to have a tougher time than hethinks, It’s not going to be a walk in the park.”
