Carl E. ‘Curley’ Hughes

Services for Carl E. “Curley” Hughes, of Brookhaven, are 3 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 14, at Harrigill Funeral Home Chapel with burial inRosehill Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes, 61, died Oct. 11, 2006, at Southwest MississippiRegional Medical Center in McComb. He was born on May 4, 1945, toCarl Joseph Hughes Sr., and Martha Jane Freeman.

He was a house mover. He was a member of First Church ofGod.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother, Carl J.Hughes Jr.

Survivors are his wife, Beverly M. Hughes, of Brookhaven; hissons, James Ray Hughes and wife Vanessa, of Summit, and Dannie RayHughes and wife Cheryl, of Bogue Chitto; his daughter, MarthaMartel and husband Ronnie, of Summit; his stepsons, Robert EarlBryan and wife Patty, of Summit, and E.J. Bryan and wife Kayla, ofBogue Chitto; his stepdaughters, Stacey Etheridge and ChasityPetrus, both of Summit; and his 18 grandchildren.

Patsy Lain Wilkins Pepper

Patsy Lain Wilkins Pepper, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. LouieWilkins, of Brookhaven, passed away in Henderson, Nev., after along battle with cancer.

Patsy was a graduate of Brookhaven High School, band member andmajorette.

She attended Ole Miss and was affiliated with Kappa Delta. Shealso attended the University of Dallas.

Preceding her in death was her sister, Lisa Wilkins Assink, whoshared the same birthday and the same wedding day in a doublewedding; her beloved grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis McLain; heruncle, Dr. Jim McLain, formerly of Tylertown and Jackson.

She is survived by her son, Patrick Louis Pepper, of Henderson;her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Louie Wilkins, of Brookhaven; hersisters, Lindy Wilkins Sullenberger and husband Jack, of Jackson,and Louana Wilkins, of Senatobia; one nephew, Joey Assink; and fournieces, Emily Diane Haley and husband Joe, of Denham Spring, La.,Alison and Anna Sullenberger, of Denver, Colo., and AmySullenberger, of “Ole Miss” and Jackson; her dear godmother, HelenHawk, of Clinton; her cousins, Stanley and Donna McLain, ofHattiesburg, Richard McElhaney, of Mobile, Ala., Mike McElhaney, ofPascagoula, and Greg and Bob Wilkins, of Jackson.

Visitation will be at Riverwood Family Funeral Service onSunday, Oct. 15, 2006, from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m. A memorialgraveside service at Riverwood Memorial Park will be Monday, Oct.16, 2006, at 1 p.m. for the family.

Memorials may be given to Faith Presbyterian Church,Brookhaven.

Melanie R. Smith

Services for Melanie R. Smith, of Brookhaven, are 2 p.m. Sunday,Oct. 15, at Brookhaven Funeral Home with burial in New ProspectBaptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Saturday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeralhome.

Mrs. Smith, 51, died Oct. 12, 2006, at her residence. She wasborn in McComb on Oct. 10, 1955, to Fred Ratcliff and GraceRatcliff Williams.

She was vice president of the mortgage department with StateBank and Trust Company. She was a member of Easthaven BaptistChurch

Preceding her in death were her father and her husband, DickieSmith.

Survivors are her mother, Grace Ratcliff Williams, ofBrookhaven; her sons, Daniel Smith and wife Paige, and DerrickSmith, all of Brookhaven; her daughter, Lauren Smith, ofBrookhaven; her brother, Jimmy Ratcliff and wife Jan, ofBrookhaven; and her grandchildren, Tate Smith and CameronRobbins.

Myrtle S. Ward

Services for Myrtle S. Ward, of Monticello, are 1 p.m. Saturday,Oct. 14, at Oakvale Baptist Church in Oakvale with burial in thechurch cemetery. Community Funeral Services is in charge ofarrangements.

Visitation is today from 4 until 9 p.m. at the church.

Mrs. Ward, 93, died Oct. 12, 2006, at Lawrence County Hospital.She was born on Dec. 30, 1912, to William Byram Spieghts andAlberta Cameron.

She was retired from Pioneer Garment Factory. She was a memberof Oakvale Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; her son,Charlie Ward; and her daughter, Nelda Bullock.

Survivors are her son, Pete Ward, of Oakvale; her daughter,Alberta Faye Smith, of Carson; her sister, Mattie J. Spieghts, ofOakvale; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and 16great-great-grandchildren.
