Two charged in man’s death

A Brookhaven man assaulted Wednesday night at his residence onDouglas Trail died at a Jackson hospital Thursday afternoon and twomen have been charged with murder in connection with the death,authorities said.
Jewel Duane Douglas, 36, of 1831 Douglas Trail, was pronounceddead by doctors at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson around 1 p.m.Thursday following injuries sustained in an assault around 9 p.m.Wednesday night, said Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris.
Robert M. Culbertson, Jr., 31, of 359 Highway 583, and MichaelD. Leggett, 30, of 1831 Douglas Trail, have been charged withmurder in the incident, said Lincoln County Sheriff SteveRushing.
“Other charges will be determined during the course of theinvestigation,” he said. “We’re still trying to determine a lot ofwhat happened.”
Leggett lived in a camper trailer at the same address as thevictim, but Rushing said he was not sure what the relationship wasbetween the two men.
“I think they worked together,” he said.
Investigators are also trying to determine how Douglas waskilled.
“We won’t really know the extent of his injuries until after theautopsy report, which will determine what caused his death,” saidDistrict Attorney Dee Bates. “Generally, we get a preliminaryreport within a week.”
Culbertson and Leggett will have an initial appearance beforethe judge to review evidence and set bail Tuesday, Bates said.
Deputies found Douglas when they were called to the scene by aneighbor reporting a disturbance around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Rushingsaid.
Douglas was transported by ambulance to King’s Daughters MedicalCenter and was transferred by helicopter from KDMC to BaptistMedical Center around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, McMorris said.
Information received at the scene of the crime led deputies toCulbertson’s home, where he and Leggett were arrested around 9:30p.m. Wednesday, Rushing said.
