Bogue Chitto hosts Mt. Olive Pirates

The Bogue Chitto Bobcats face their toughest test of the 2006football season Friday night when they host the tough Mt. OlivePirates in an important Region 4-1A contest. The game begins at 7p.m. on Troy Smith Field.

In Lincoln County action, Brookhaven visits Kosciusko, GulfportSt. John invades Enterprise, Hinds AHS is at Loyd Star and WestLincoln travels to Stringer.

Bogue Chitto shut out Salem 33-0 in lastFriday’s big region road win. Coach Gareth Sartin’s Bobcatsimproved to 4-1 in the region and 4-3 on the season.

Mt. Olive (7-1, 6-0) clipped Gulfport St. John 46-35 in a wildregion shootout last week.

In the win over Salem, Cole Laird powered Bogue Chitto with 12rushes for 110 yards and a touchdown. Carrying the football 12times for 92 yards and scoring three TDs was Donyea Dillion.Following with three carries for 76 yards and a touchdown was ByronKersee.

The Bobcat defense got 10 tackles apiece from Scotty Brown andAustin Jones.

Last year, Mt. Olive pounded Bogue Chitto 43-0.

Enterprise dropped a tough 49-24 loss to BiloxiMercy Cross in Region 4-1A play last Friday. The Yellow Jackets,coached by Roe Burns, face another Gulf Coast team in Gulfport St.John. Enterprise is 1-7 overall and 1-5 in region play.

St. John is 2-5 on the season and 2-4 in region action.

“St. John runs a wing-T offense,” said Coach Burns. “They run a50 defense. They try to control the football on offense by runningthe football. Against Mt. Olive, they had 78 snaps and Mt. Olivehad 17 snaps. Mt. Olive got the points.”

“I think it’s two evenly matched teams,” added Burns. “The kidsare fired up about playing.”

Chris Moak powered the Enterprise offense with 11 rushes for 103yards and a touchdown in the loss to Mercy Cross. MT Martin carriednine times for 69 yards.

Defensively, Moak directed the Jackets with 12 tackles. Makingnine stops was Trey Boyd.

In last season’s game, St. John roughed up Enterprise 42-22.

Loyd Star returns to William E. “Sambo” SmithField for its final home game of the regular season. The Hornets,coached by Josh Thibodeaux, host Region 6-2A rival Hinds AHS.

Last Friday in region play, Loyd Star (2-6, 0-3) dropped a 32-13decision to Madison St. Joseph and Hinds AHS (5-3, 1-2) fell toAmite County 28-14.

“Hinds AHS is pretty good,” said Thibodeaux. “They are real fastand real physical. They have a couple of real good standoutplayers. They have a good good running back in Joshua King, Theyrun a couple of different sets. They are going to pound it at you.They are still one of the top teams in the district.

“On defense, their base is a 5-3 look,” continued Thibodeaux.”It varies to what offense you are running.”

In the loss to St. Joe, Hunter Speeg scored a 2-yard touchdownand Josh McCaffrey kicked the PAT for the Hornets. Donald Shorterconnected with John Smith for a 48-yard TD. Smith had 5 catches for100 yards.

Speeg directed the Hornet defense with with 9 solo tackles, 6assists and a pass deflection.

Hinds AHS produced a 52-14 victory over Loyd Star last year.

West Lincoln ended its 20-game losing streakwith a 15-12 Region 4-1A victory over Dexter last Friday. CoachBrooks Burns’ Bears visit Stringer to meet the Red Devils in a keydistrict test. West Lincoln is 1-7 overall and 1-5 in regionplay.

Natchez Cathedral crushed Stringer 41-14 last Friday. Stringerstands 2-4 in the region and is 2-6 on the season.

“Stringer has really good inside linebackers,” said Coach Burns.”They are very good. They get to the football. Offensively, theirquarterback can throw the ball decent. They have three receiverswho can catch the football.”

Burns talked to his team this week about four things the Bearsneed to do on offense and defense to beat Stringer. “We talkedabout our four keys to winning. On offense, no turnovers andeliminate stupid penalties, On defense, containment on the ends anddon’t give up any big plays.

“Stringer doesn’t run the ball up the middle,” added Burns.”They like to run to the outside. Up front, if we do what we havedone the past two weeks, we should dominate them. I feel we canmove the ball on them.”

In the victory over Dexter, Lee Jones led West Lincoln with 31carries for 121 yards. Seth Lofton rushed for 54 yards on 11carries and a touchdown.

The Bear defense was led by DAILY LEADER Player of the WeekKolby Burris with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Last year, Stringer stomped West Lincoln 45-6.
