Cougars muddy ASC

Brookhaven Academy fans braved cool temperatures and a brisknortherly wind Friday night to watch their Cougars whip the AmiteSchool Center Rebels 35-14 on a muddy field in the last District6-AA game for both teams. District champion Brookhaven improved to9-1 overall and finished a perfect 4-0 in district play. Amitedropped to 1-9 overall and 0-4.
Both teams had difficulty getting things going in the first halfof play thanks to the excessive rainfall that fell in LincolnCounty late in the week. Brookhaven was able to draw first blood atthe 6:33 mark of the first quarter when Bradley Allred scored on a1-yard run, wrapping up a 7-play, 87 yard drive. Price Sessums ranthe two point conversion for an 8-0 Cougar lead.
For the second consecutive drive, the Rebels moved the balleffectively but were unable to register any points, turning theball over on downs.
Brookhaven responded with a 4 play 55 yard drive, capped off bySessums finding a wide open Adam Lucas in the end zone from 17yards out. The extra point attempt failed as Brookhaven took a 14-0lead into halftime.
“We really didn’t play well in the first half.” said Brookhavencoach Bo Milton. “The field conditions weren’t that good, but weweren’t very aggressive and we didn’t execute that well. We pickedit up a little in the second half. Offensively we played a lotbetter in the third quarter.”
Milton saw his team register 21 points in the third quarterbefore he was able to substitute his younger players. The Cougarstook the opening drive and marched down the field, setting up a 5yard run by Corey Dickerson with 10:03 remaining in the quarter.Seth Cliburn ran in the two point conversion for a 22-0 Brookhavenlead.
The Cougars chalked up their second score of the quarter asKolby Byrd scored on a 3-yard run with 6 minutes left. The extrapoint attempt failed, giving the hosts a 28-0 lead.
Brookhaven’s defense responded on the ensuing drive, sackingRebel quarterback Justin Baggett on three consecutive plays. TheRebels were forced to punt but could only manage a total of threeyards on the punt, setting up Brookhaven deep in Rebel territory.The Cougars took advantage of the good field position andregistered their last score of the night with 54 seconds remainingin the quarter as Sessums darted in from 16 yards out. Dickersonadded the extra point for a 35-0 lead.
The Rebels were able to register their first score of the nightwith 10:39 remaining in the game as Johnathan Deville scored on a 5yard run. The two point conversion attempt failed as the Rebelsclosed the score to 35-6.
The only other score of the night for the visitors came with6:19 remaining as Baggett scored on a 22 yard run. Baggett addedthe two point conversion, ending the scoring at 35-14.
Sessums led the Brookhaven offense with 134 yards on 9 carriesand a touchdown. Dickerson followed with 116 yard on 8 carries.Lucas caught the only Brookhaven pass for 17 yards and atouchdown.
Deville led the Rebels with 83 yards on 17 attempts and atouchdown. Nicholas Forman followed with 10 carries for 38yards.
On defense, Kolby Bryd led Brookhaven with 11tackles. Aaron Douglas followed with 9 stops. Bradley Allred andBrandon Smith made 7 stops apiece.
Brookhaven travels to Baker, La. Friday night to face CentralPrivate in the last regular season game for both teams. Kickoff isset for 7 p.m.
