Romeo Arness Barnes

Services for Sgt. 1st Class Romeo Arness Barnes, of Brookhaven,are 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Alexander Junior High School withburial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brookhaven. Williams Mortuary is incharge of arrangements.

Visitation is Friday from 1 until 5 p.m. at the funeral home,with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m. at Macedonia M.B. Church inBrookhaven.

Barnes, 42, died Oct. 28, 2006, at Southwest MississippiRegional Medical Center in McComb. He was born in Brookhaven onAug. 4, 1964, to Jesse Barnes Sr. and Lou Ertis Barnes-Bowman.

He was a 1982 graduate of Brookhaven High School and attendedAlcorn State University. He was a member of Macedonia M.B. Churchand Joshua Lodge No. 249 and Friendship Lodge No. 923. As acivilian, he was employed with Waggoner Engineering Co., inJackson.

In April 1984, Sgt. 1st Class Romeo Arness Barnes began hismilitary career when he joined the Mississippi Army National Guardas an infantryman with Company C, 1/155th Infantry Battalion inBrookhaven. In November 1990 he was called to active duty insupport of Desert Storm/Desert Shield, and again in August 2004 forOperation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. He was servingat Camp Shelby with the 3-349 Infantry, 3/87 Division as part ofOperation Warrior Trainer.

Throughout his career, Sgt. 1st Class Barnes received numerousaccolades and awards: the Army Reserve Components AchievementMedal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War of Terrorism ServiceMedal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, ArmyService Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq CampaignMedal, Mississippi War Medal, Armed Force Reserve Medal (2),Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon andOverseas Service Ribbon. He also was presented several stateawards, including the Mississippi War Medal (2), MississippiLongevity Medal (3), and Mississippi Service School Ribbon.

Preceding him in death were his father; his brothers, WillieBruce Barnes and Lorenzo Barnes; his grandparents, Mary Alice andBrady Johnson, R.A. and Savannah Barnes, and Ella Mae Merchant.

Survivors are his wife, Felicia Merchant Barnes, of Brookhaven;his mother, Lou Ertis Barnes-Bowman, of Brookhaven; his stepfather,James Earl Bowman, of Brookhaven; his sons, Cearic Barnes, RomeoBarnes and Barwoski Dodds, all of Brookhaven; his daughter,Tavithia Porter, of Brookhaven; his brothers, Jesse Barnes Jr., ofHolly Springs, Jeffery Johnson and wife Wanda, of Baton Rouge, La.,Terrell Bowman, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Fredrick Bowman, ofIndianapolis, Ind.; his sisters, Regina Washington and husbandSuverdo, Cynthia Watson and Karen Barnes, all of Brookhaven, BonnieWilliams, of Portsmouth, Va., Ann Handy, of Inglewood, Calif.,Catherine Paschall and husband Will, and Bridgette Bowman, all ofIndianapolis, Irma Ammons, of Weed, Calif., and Mary Fairman, ofTacoma, Wash.; his grandfather, John Henry Dixon, of Caseyville;his grandmother, Bertha Mae Bowman, of Wesson; his twograndchildren, and many other nieces, nephews and otherrelatives.

Mary Ellen Berner

A memorial service for Mary Ellen Berner, a resident of St.Catherine’s Village in Madison, will be held at 11:30 a.m.Saturday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Clinton.Mark Seepe Funeral Home and Crematorium, of Jackson, is in chargeof arrangements.

Miss Berner, 90, died Oct. 29, 2006. She was born in BogueChitto on Nov. 21, 1915, to Perry Wesley Berner and Margaret HillBerner.

She was a graduate of McComb High School. She received aBachelor of Music degree in piano from Mississippi State Collegefor Women, a Bachelor of Music degree in voice from BelhavenCollege, and a Master of Music degree in voice from the Universityof Nebraska.

A mezzo-soprano, she was featured in many recitals in centralMississippi as a singer and as an accompanist. She was highlyrespected as a teacher of piano and voice in the Jackson area. Shewas a member of the music faculty at Mississippi College for 24years before retiring in 1981. She served as organist at CentralPresbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, both in Jackson.She was active in the Chaminade Music Club of Jackson for manyyears. She was a member of First Baptist Church Clinton, sang withthe Joy Makers Choir and was active as long as her healthallowed.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers and twosisters.

Survivors are her caregivers, Richard and Marilyn Joiner, ofJackson, Tenn., and many friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the Avylon Music ScholarshipFund at Mississippi College, or to a favorite charity.

Patrick Leo ‘Pat’ Malone

Services for Patrick Leo “Pat” Malone, of Brookhaven, were 11a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the chapel at Riverwood Family FuneralService with burial in Riverwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Malone, 61, died Oct. 31, 2006, at his residence. He wasborn on April 8, 1945, to Francis Leo Malone and Alma Lee AllenMalone.

He was a 1963 graduate of Brookhaven High School and attendedCopiah-Lincoln Community College. He was a surveyor and was retiredfrom Shell Oil and Atmos Energy. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed theoutdoors and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, niecesand nephews, teaching them about hunting and fishing. He was aloyal NASCAR fan.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter, CalaMalone; and his stepson, John McDonald.

Survivors are his wife, Linda McIntyre Malone; his stepsonDaniel McDonald and wife Athena, of Brookhaven; his daughters, LisaBeeson and husband Bobby, and Missy Smith and husband Kyrk, all ofBrookhaven; his brothers, Mike Malone, of Natchez, Mitch Malone, ofMeridian, and Mark Malone, of Brookhaven; his grandchildren, SawyerWallace, Shelby Wallace, Brandon Beeson, Logan McDonald, EmmaleighMcDonald, William McDonald, Brooklyn McDonald, all of Brookhaven,and Afton Linton, of Jackson; and his threegreat-grandchildren.

Mrs. Runnels, 77, died Oct. 30, 2006, at Southwest MississippiRegional Medical Center. She was born in Jefferson County on March10, 1929, to Sylvester and Hennie Wallace.

She was a member of the Eastern Star.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her daughter; two sonsand two brothers.

Survivors are her devoted husband of 60 years, G.W. Runnels; herdaughters, Imogene Runnels, Dorothy Chambliss and DeloriseRunnels-Griffin; her son, James Runnels; her sisters, ThelmaRankins, Ester Jones, Ora Lee Johnson and Lillie McClinton; herbrothers, Sylvester Wallace, Milton Wallace, James Wallace andEdward Wallace; her adopted son, Cedric Doss; and a host ofgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren,nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Virginia Marlyne Reeves Smith

She died Nov. 1, 2006, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She wasborn in Baytown, Texas, on Feb. 28, 1951, to Homer Joseph Reevesand Edna Lane Johnston.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Survivors are her daughter, Jennifer Rodgers; her sisters,Darlyne Reeves, Arlyne Redeise and Jody Ross; her brothers, WilliamLloyd Reeves and Joe Glen Reeves; her six grandchildren, onegreat-grandchild, 10 nieces, four nephews and a host of otherrelatives and friends.
