Lawrence Co. splits twinbill with Prentiss

MONTICELLO – Lawrence County and Prentiss split a varsitydoubleheader in high school basketball action Tuesday night. Ingirls action, Prentiss pulled away in the closing minutes, to earna 56-40 win. The Lawrence County boys defeated Prentiss 76-46.

Coach Preston Wilson’s Cougars, 5-1, landed 4 players in doublefigures as they earned their third straight win at home. OliverPeyton led with 16 points, Albert Brown added 13, Dominique Westhad 12, and Perrin Wells finished with 11.

Lawrence County broke to a 10-0 lead and stretched that lead toas many as 20 point in the middle stages of the game. Prentissrallied to within 10 points late in the third quarter, but theCougars broke the game wide open after that.

West had 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 loose ball recoveries togo with his 12 points. Peyton handed out 7 assists, and Brownenjoyed a double-double, adding a game-high 12 rebounds to his 13points.

Prentiss was led by Jordan Watts, who tallied 11 points.

In girls play, Coach Vicki Rutland’s rebuildingLady Cougars kept it close all night long, only to see Prentissblow things open in the last 5 minutes. LCHS, still looking for itsfirst win of the season, led 8-5 after one quarter, and trailed byjust 7 points entering the fourth. Early in the fourth, the LadyCougars cut Prentiss’ lead to 4, but Wanda Ard’s Lady Bulldogspulled away after that.

Kiera Davis (18) and Cherrelle Jones (17) sizzled, combining for35 of Prentiss’ 56 points. Dede Griffith added 9.

Fiere Brown provided most of the offense for Lawrence County.She hit 4 3-pointers en route to a 15-point night. Latoya Showersled the Lady Cougars in rebounding with 6. Brown, Brittany Collins,Kasey May, and Cande’l May each had 3 rebounds.

Lawrence County will travel to New Augusta on Friday, for abasketball doubleheader with Perry Central.
