SUMMIT — A desperation shot by Bulldog sophomore guard DeanHadley with one second left to play gave the Holmes CommunityCollege men a 70-69 comeback win over the Co-Lin Wolves Mondayafternoon in the Southwest Coca-Cola Basketball Classic.

Hadley (6-5, 210), who comes from Los Angeles, finished the gamewith 9 points but provided the game-winning shot when Coach ToddKimble’s Bulldogs needed it.

In the women’s game, Co-Lin Coach Gwyn Young went to the benchto jump-start a sluggish offense and came away with a 69-61 victoryover Holmes.

Co-Lin faces Southern-Shreveport today, beginning at 2 p.m. forthe women and 4 for the men. Southwest faces Holmes in the nightgames.

Southern-Shreveport swept Southwest last night, winning thewomen’s game 65-64 and the men’s game 88-83.

Holmes 70, Co-Lin 69

With 41 seconds to play and holding a 69-68 lead, the Wolves(4-2) ran time off the clock to set up a shot but were impatientand missed. Holmes (7-1) took the ball as the Co-Lin defense lookedlike it was going to hold after the ball got loose from theBulldogs. Hadley came up with the loose ball and scored thegame-winning shot at the buzzer.

“On our last possession, we didn’t get a good shot,” said Co-Linmen’s coach Dennis Sims after the loss. “Holmes found a way to makethe shot.”

Both teams exchanged leads several times in the second half. TheWolves were up by 3 points, 67-64, but the Bulldogs chipped away totie the game with 2:01 in the contest.

At the half, Co-Lin led Holmes by 5 points, 32-27.

“Our defense looked good at times,” added Sims. “We had somelapses and too many turnovers.”

Powering the Wolves with 21 points and 8 rebounds was sophomorecenter Christian Marshall. Joey Jackson fired in 11 points,Finishing with 10 points was Greg Truvillion.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore forward Richard Worthy with21 points. Sean Johnson fired in 16 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.Michael Marzette followed with 10 points. Making 6 steals wasDexter Brunson.

Co-Lin 69, Holmes 61

The Lady Wolves (6-0) struggled in the first half, leading theLady Bulldogs (0-6) 30-29 following a trey by sophomore guard HannaPorter with 3 seconds left until halftime.

“I thought our subs (Corissa Tillman, Alisha Mason and KristinEllis) came in and did a good job in the second half,” said Young.Tillman scored 9 points. Ellis followed with 6 points and Masonwith 4 in the game.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 35-30 lead on the Lady Wolvesearly in the second half. Ellis nailed a field goal to cut thedeficit to 35-32 with 15:40 left. Mason followed with a field goalto trim the Holmes lead to 1 point, 36-34, seconds later. WhitneyScott and Ellis hit back-to-back field goals to give the LadyWolves a 38-36 lead. Co-Lin never allowed Holmes to get back intothe game.

Directing Co-Lin with 11 points and 5 rebounds was Porter. NikkiWilliams and Dominique Whitfield netted 10 points apiece. Whitfieldand Erica Trahan led off the backboards with 9 rebounds apiece.Tillman and Trahan scored nine points apiece. Williams also had 4assists.

“We missed too many shots in the first half,” added Young. “Westarted making them in the second half.”

The Lady Wolves were 15 of 16 from the free throw line on thenight.

Holmes, coached by Ron Aldy, was led by sophomore forwardMyeshia Johnson with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds. AshleyBilbro finished with 10 points.
