S-S Jaguars turn back Co-Lin

SUMMIT — After seven games, the Co-Lin Wolves are still lookingfor the right chemistry. The Wolfpack nearly overcame a disastrousfirst half and 24 turnovers before falling 56-52 to theSouthern-Shreveport Jaguars in Tuesday’s second round of theSouthwest Coca-Cola Classic.
In Tuesday’s nightcap, Southwest edged Holmes Community College86-83 in Horace C. Holmes Gymnasium. Co-Lin (4-3) resumes play Nov.30, at Mississippi Delta in Moorehead.
“We are struggling to find the right combination,” said Co-Linmen’s coach Dennis Sims. “We pulled four starters early in thegame.
“Offensively, it was nasty,” continued Sims. “We got very littleout of our transition game. We have a long way to go.
“Throughout the whole game we defended pretty well.”
Two years ago, Sims saw his team lose to Southern-Shreveport inthe semifinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. The Jaguars (7-2)flashed offensive potential against Co-Lin but turnovers slowedthem, too.
Josh Jefferson led the Jaguars and all scorers with 14 points.Demondrae Robinson and Greg Horne both had 10 points.
Co-Lin got 11 points each from Greg Truvillion and ChristianMarshall. The 6-foot-10 Marshall also had 9 rebounds.
In the first half, Co-Lin struggled offensively, trailing 9-0and 14-4. The Jags led by 18 points, 30-12, on a pair of freethrows by Robinson.
The Wolves battled back on defense in the final 20 minutes ofaction. They reduced their deficit to 8 points, 32-24, onMarshall’s short jumper with 15:40 left to play.
Co-Lin guard Dexter Brunson swished a pair of long-distancetreys in the final minute, cutting the Jags’ lead to 55-52 with 21seconds left. However, the Wolves were unable to capitalize afterforcing 2 straight turnovers.
The Jags, coached by David Francis, got a driving layup fromJefferson, plus a baseline drive and a free throw, to turn backCo-Lin’s rally.
