Loyd Star sweeps Hornets

Shannon Chester pumped in a game-high 23 points Tuesday night tolead the unbeaten Loyd Star Lady Hornets to a 50-44 win over thevisiting Bogue Chitto Lady ‘Cats. Chester also grabbed fiverebounds, made eight steals and had an assist.

In boys action, Ron Jones directed the Hornets to a 56-36 winover the Bobcats with 15 points, six rebounds, three steals andfive assists.

Friday’s scheduled game with Enterprise has been moved toSaturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

Loyd Star 50, Bogue Chitto 44

In the girls matchup, Bogue Chitto (4-2) took a 14-12 lead overLoyd Star (7-0). At the half, the Lady ‘Cats held a slim 21-18lead.

“We had a sluggish first half and came out and played better inthe second half,” said Loyd Star girls coach Jan Delaughter.”Shannon Chester was able to get some steals off our half-courttrap pressure. Alysha Johnson played good defense for us coming offthe bench.”

The Lady Hornets posted a 15-12 run in the third quarter to tiethe game at 33-33 going into the final frame. Loyd Star outscoredBogue Chitto 17-11 in the final frame to keep the win.

“We struggled getting the ball down the court and we struggledmaking free throws,” said Bogue Chitto girls coach ChristiTerrell.

The Lady ‘Cats were 10 of 24 from the free throw line while theLady Hornets were 5 of 10.

Adding support to the Loyd Star win with eight points each wereHaley Sones and Laura Britt.

Bogue Chitto was led by Kimberlee Thomas with 15 points and 18rebounds. LaToya Brandon followed with 13 points and fiverebounds.

Loyd Star 56, Bogue Chitto 36

The Hornets (5-1) jumped on the Bobcats 15-6 in the firstquarter and pushed their lead to 30-18 at halftime. A 14-7 run bythe hosts put them on top 44-25 going into the final frame.

“This was the best three quarters we have played all year,” saidLoyd Star boys coach Gene Britt. “Everyone was hustling andrebounding. We were able to keep Bogue Chitto from gettinginside.

“Everyone did their job in rebounding and playing defense. Wewere very prepared for Bogue Chitto. We had a good teameffort.”

Rickey Barnes fired in 12 points and led off the backboards with16 rebounds for the Hornets. Glenn Thomas netted 10 points andgrabbed five rebounds.

The Bobcats, coached by Andrew Smithie, were led by MarioAddison with 12 points, followed by Dantae Ratcliff with ninepoints.

Junior varsity action

The Loyd Star girls beat Bogue Chitto 34-20. Directing the LadyHornets with 10 points was Myranda Watts, followed by Emily Vaughnand Alysha Johnson with seven points apiece.

Shelby Tobias led the Lady ‘Cats with seven points.

In boys action, the Hornets knocked off the Bobcats 33-25.Joseph Shelby and Keldric Smith fired in eight points apiece forLoyd Star.

Bogue Chitto got nine points from Justin London. Byron Kerseenetted five points.
