Brown, Byrd head All-County defense

Linebackers Scotty Brown and Kolby Byrd have something incommon. They like to hit people: especially quarterbacks, runningbacks and receivers.

Brown, a junior from Bogue Chitto; and Byrd, a sophomore fromBrookhaven Academy; made the most tackles in Lincoln County duringthe 2006 campaign. For their efforts, they have been selectedco-Most Valuable Defensive Players on The DAILY LEADER’s 2006All-Lincoln County Football Team.

The DL’s Defensive Team is loaded with hard-hitting tacklers andswift defenders. The defensive line includes Virgil Sanders andLarry Winters of Brookhaven, and Aaron Douglas and Bradley Allredof Brookhaven Academy.

Joining Byrd and Brown at linebacker are Bart Sias and GregWalker of Brookhaven. The secondary includes R.J. Jenkins ofBrookhaven, Hunter Speeg of Loyd Star, M.T. Martin of Enterpriseand Keith Franklin of Brookhaven Academy.

Serving as punter is Brookhaven’s Will Thibodeaux who averaged39.2 yards per punt.

Scotty Brown (5-10, 190, jr.)was credited with 156 tackles this season. He also had 1interception.

“Scotty has a nose for the football,” said Bogue Chitto coachGarreth Sartin. “He’s aggressive on defense. On offense, he’s oneof our best blockers, too.”

Kolby Byrd (6-0, 215, so.) wascredited with 131 tackles this season, helping the Cougars win theDistrict 6-AA championship. He also had 3 interceptions and 3fumble recoveries.

“Kolby is big-body kid who makes a lot of hard-nosed tackles,”said Brookhaven Academy coach Bo Milton. “He’s not afraid to stickhis nose in there and make those tackles.”

Byrd also saw some action at receiver on offense, catching 7passes for 136 yards and 1 TD.

Virgil Sanders (5-7, 245, sr.) was a leader onBrookhaven’s defense. He was credited with 64 tackles and 4sacks.

Aaron Douglas (6-0, 165, sr.) accounted for 85tackles at Brookhaven Academy. He was the sack leader with 20 tohis credit.

Larry Winters (6-2, 235, sr.) worked at end ondefense for the Panthers. He made 38 tackles and had 11 sacks.

Bradley Allred (6-1, 215, sr.) anchored BA’s defensiveline. He has 72 tackles and 12 sacks.

Bart Sias (6-0, 210, sr.) had 41 tackles for thePanthers.

Greg Walker (6-2, 165, sr.) was credited with57 tackles for the Panthers.

R.J. Jenkins (6-1, 155, sr.) was a leader inOle Brook’s secondary. He had 56 tackles and 5 interceptions,helping the Panthers reach the second round of the stateplayoffs.

Hunter Speeg (6-1, 190, sr.) was a defensiveleader for the Loyd Star Hornets.

Keith Franklin (5-9, 150, sr.) collected 53tackles for the Cougars. He also intercepted 4 passes.

M.T. Martin (5-8, 140, jr.) totaled 72 tacklesfor the Fighting Yellow Jackets.
