BA teams cruise in tourney openers

Brookhaven Academy’s teams made a strong impression in the firstround of the annual Brookhaven Academy Holiday InvitationalTournament Wednesday night as both Cougar teams whipped theiropponents and moved on to Friday night’s semifinals. The LadyCougars whipped Huntington (La.) 63-29 and the Cougars scorchedBowling Green (La.) 75-48 in John R. Gray Gymnasium.

The Cougars will face Huntington, which topped Silliman 52-44,at 8:15 Friday night while the Lady Cougars will host Trinity at7.

In today’s girls action, Huntington faces Central Private at 1in consolation bracket while Bowling Green plays Hillcrest at 2 andSilliman faces Marshall at 4:30. In boys action, Huntington playsBowling Green at 3:15 and Trinity meets Central Private at 7 in theconsolation bracket. Copiah plays Marshall at 5:45.

Senior forward T-Boy Lynch scored a game high 27 points to goalong with 7 assists and four steals to lead Brookhaven. CoreyDickerson followed with 17 points. Daniel Lofton was able to pulldown 10 rebounds and dish out 5 assists. Josh Winborne had 5assists of his own.

“We still have some areas we need to work on, but we playedpretty well.” said Brookhaven Academy boys coach Dale Watts. “Weshot the ball well tonight, but we need to work harderdefensively.”

The Cougars sacked 12 treys, led by Dickerson who sank 5.

Kevin Bond scored 11 points to lead Bowling Green. Justin Danielfollowed with 7 points.

In the varsity girls game, Kelli Snider scoreda game-high 18 points and Betsy Lynch added 16 as the Lady Cougarsimproved to 12-3 on the year. Lynch added 5 steals and 4 assists togo along with her point total. Kacey Rutland and Kellie Brady eachcollected 3 rebounds.

“I thought we shot the ball well tonight.” said BrookhavenAcademy girls coach Barry Gray. “We made some mistakes but ourshooting made up for that.”

Gray’s girls roared to a 41-8 halftime advantage.

Phyllicia Woods scored 11 points to lead Huntington’s LadyHounds.
